Shu Francisco, Oct. 80. The coun
try around Watsonville has 2600 car
loads of apples to be sent east and to
England during the next few weeks.
While the Santa Fe has no road into
that great apple district, it has been
given quite a number of shipping con
tracts. In order to fulfill them It
Is compelled to pay the Southern Pa
cific a pretty stiff rale for the portion
of the haul between Watsonville and
Mojave.
Again, the Santa Fe cannot use Its
own refrigerator cars to haul the ap
ples, but must use those of the Ar-1
tnour Cnr Line. The latter has an j
exclusive contract to handle all pro-1
ducts needing refrigerator cars which
originate on the lines of the Southern
Pacific.
This use of Armour cars by the
Santa Fe. while many of its own re
frigerator cars are Idle this time of
year, has caused much comment in
shipping and railroad circles, and the
explanation Is that the Santa Fe had
to submit to the demands of the Armour-Southern
Pacific combine or not
get the freight.
Just a few days ago P. A. Valentine,
a relative by marriage of the Armours
and one of their head men in a busi
ness way, was taken Into the Harrl-
man roads as a airecior.
This fact, together with the way
Watsonville apples have to go east
Un Armour cars, convinces the shipping
community that Harrlman and the Ar
mours were never so close together as
at present. In spite of the widespread
demand of snrppe.rs that railroads
should own refrigerator cars of their
own and In spite of the efforts of the
interstate commerce to curb and con
trol Ihe monopoly enjoyed by the Ar
mour Car Line on the Harrlman and
other roads.

Don't Miss This
Problem Being Faced at
'Cripple. Creek.
Uenvor. Col.. Oct. 30. The serious
problem or draining me rippie .m-
mining district Is to be solved by the
construction of a big drainage tun
nel. For some time the mines In the
Cripple Creek district have been
hampered by the large amount of
water which flowed into the lower
workings of the various mines.
Some of the mines were compelled
to infral pumping works to enable
them to continue work in the lower
parts eif their works. With the In
creasing depth of the shafts the dif
ficulties caused by the Inflow of wa
ter became greater and the drainage
question became more serious every
day. Filially the owners of the prin
cipal mines decided to employ an ex
pert engineer to report upon some
plan for draining the district, which
is about three miles wide and three
and ne-hlf miles long. It lies west
of the town of t'ripple Creek, border
ing on the city limits and taking in
the towns of Victor. Elkton, Inde
pendence. Globe Hill, Altman and
Cameron.
I). W. Bruuton, the engineer, em
ployed by the mine owners, reported
In favor of a tunnel, which would
drain the district to a depth of over
3no feet and would permit the mar
keting of enormous bodies of low
graik ores from a great depth. Dur
ing the year 1S04 the Cripple Creek
district produced S139.0H0.000 in
gold.

Washington. Oct. 30. The navy de
partment has decided to ask for no
additional drydock construction at the
New York navy yard. It has been
round after a thorough investigation,
that there Is no room at the yard
where a dock could be placed, and It
Is believed that the limit of the yard
in Its development as a repair and
construction station has been reached.
The dry dock provisions, therefore,
will he made In other directions.
The officers on duty at navy yards
In nearly all cases this year, recom
mended the construction of new dry
docks, nnd at some places, such as
j Iloston, there has Just been complet
ed a dock. It Is likely that Secretary
Bonaparte will be asked to urge con
gress to provide new dry docks at the
Puget Sound, Washington, naval sta
tion and the Boston navy yard. There
Is no disposition Just at present to
do much at San Juan. All the facili
ties of the government are being de
voted to the development of the sta
tion at Guantanamo, but later, of
course, there will be more particular
attention paid to the Porto Rlcan sta
tion, which Is necessarily considered
of less Importance than the establish

and unnecessary risks by holding the
convention in New Orleans.
It Is maintained that New Orleans
cannot, possibly, guarantee that there
will be no yellow fever epidemic In
that city next year and as such an
eventuality Is decidedly possible, it
would be necessary to change the
convention to some other city any
way. The cltlzenB of New Orleans
will strongly oppose the plan of
changing the place of the convention.
Forty thousand dollars have already
been subscribed to the fund for the
