The Northern Pacific has u party of surveyors working to tne north of Vancouver, 111 an effort to find a route by which It can reach thut city by leaving the river bank ut Cupe Horn, says the Telegram. Thut is the rumor that reaches Portland today. This would meun that the line would cross Clark county to the higher ground, near Fern Prairie and La Camas. Just what the object of the move Is Is hard to say, as It Is generally thought the route down the river is better, but the supposition Is the com pany is merely determining the more feasible way of reaching the llarruck town. Activity all along the river Is pro nounced. and It is promised that as fast as men can be secured the work of grading will he extended, and that tracklaylng will Immediately follow. Time will be lost In completing the road because of the heavy operations which must follow the effort to cut through ("ape Horn, and there are other points where the rocky forma tion will Interfere materially with the progress, but It Is planned to gauge the undertaking so that mont of.the rock labor will he started this winter, and by the time spring arrives the way will be clear for rapid progress to ward Portland. In this connection the bridges will likewise receive consider ation, and Just as soon as the North cm Pacific officials give their approv al to the report made by Ralph Mo Je.skl, the bridge expert. It Is expected plans and specifications will be issued for the contractors. Apparently but little time Is to be lost by the Northern Pacific In secur Ing title to land adjoining the right of way of its Knlama branch through Vancouver, and active construction operations will start soon. Options on all property adjoining the tracks on both sides to an average depth of nearly 200 feet have but short time to run, and it wax thought they will be allowed to lapse. Deals of the past few days Indicate that this thought is correct. Yesterday afternoon an instrument was placed on record securing to thi Northern Pacific an extensive tract of the desired lands within city limtls. and giving the company possession of almost all the lands in question on the west side of the tracks, extending back to Frances street. This transfer cov ers all the Knock property In that sec tion with the exception of a few smnll lots, ami all blocks numbered from 5 to 17 of the Can by addition. This prop erty extends from Thirteenth street to the northern city limits. Immediate ly across the county road on the north from this Is the Ricker estate proper tv, deeds to which were recorded a H. In short, the exact opposite of what has been called "two o'elock-in-the-mornlng" courage. Three different origins of the expression have lieen suggested. According to some, "Dutch" In this case is used simply as the adjective corresponding to the noon "Holliinils." as applied to that kind of ardent spirits. Others assert positively that the phrase arose ns a shut at the Dutch troops who showed the white feather of Kontenoy. But perhaps the Is'st explanation Is that tills uncomplimentary allusion to the Dutch refers to a practice common in former times In Hollnnd of eucourag ing those who were condemned to ex ecution to drink heavily before they I were hanged.
