Their lives have no glittering peaks, towering high for the gaze of an admiring world, and yet the level plain of their toll, how rich In strength and usefulness! There are women, too, who do not shine In society, who are the queens of no drawing rooms, but who in their own quiet and sheltered homes do their tasks with faithfulness, move in ways of homely duty and unselfish serving, with sweet patience and quiet cheerfulness. William D, Stinson In San Francisco Star. WIIAT PENDLETON IS DOING. union Is needful and harmony and co operation necessary. So bringing the people together is the first step toward development and betterment. The hopgrower from Eugene and In dependence und the wheatgrower from Athena and Helix are Interested In better transportation and markotlng fit r I lit lex, but being strangers, they can accomplish but little until they are brought together and made to under stand the situation and menus neces sary to securing the end. So a good acquaintance, an intimate, cordial, reciprocal friendship, is tho first step in their program for betterment. This is but an Illustration, but it Il lustrates fully the situation. Ignor ance uf conditions and misunderstand ing of public questions cause more friction and delays and misapprehen sions mid losses than any other agen cies that retard and hinder progress. So a good, broad acquaintance Is the first thing to get. Then if things are not all right you can get something else to help make them right. Hut get acquaintance first. For this reason, all meeting and con ventions and Journeys and tnlkfests are good. the ;v.utns ASI.KKP. House Work 1x2 ) Sixty-five thousand dollars spent by Pendleton In the past year '.or new .c,rool buildings and -ipnient and $30,000 to be spent in the next year for churches and church Improve ments, is not so bad for the education al and spiiltual side of Pendleton, after all. One hundred new dwellings In the past IS months, and every one of the six largest mercantile firms occupying double their former floor space In the past 16 months, Is a record that all may be proud of. These are some of the things that are being done by Pendleton. We are I proud to tell the I'ortland merchants and business men about It. And then we are doing other things. The Commercial association has Jump ed from a handful of members, to a strong, virile, vigorous organization of over 200. It has added 100 per cent to its floor space and purchased $1000 worth of equipment for gymnasium and library. More wool was baled, more wheat ground Into flour and more mutton shipped from Pendleton this year than during the year before. More money has beeu deposited in Petidleton banks and more farmers have moved to town to educate their children than during last year, and so the movement Is forward and upward. Everything is hopeful. Even with the Lewis and Clark fair tugging at the purse strings of the country, Pen dleton business institutions did an enormous business this year. More. in many Instances, than over before during the summer months. The tributary territory surrounding Pendleton is Increasing In wealth each year, and consequently is Increasing In potency as a business builder for the city. More carloads of merchanJise have been unloaded In the city this fail than ever before In one fall, and there are more people ready to buy It than ever before. The city Is just entering her best era Irrigation, stockraising, manufactur ing, and all the arts which form the basis of the city's life, are growing and prospering. The business barometer la pointing In the right direction. Pen lleton people feel the growing "roll" in their insl Je pocket, and they know that ail la well. The wholesale shipment of Ameri can girls into China to become slaves In the hurems of mandarins. Illustrates the audacity, power and persistence of lawlessness. With all the police powers of the na tions guarding the commerce and in tercourse of tho world. With Chris tianity and reform crowding Into the fartherest haunt of barbarism. With teachers and jjieachers risking life In the wilds of savagery, yet this nefari ous traffic assumes gigantic propor tions under the very nose of all these powers organized for good. The guards of civilization ure usleep. But this broader International Illus tration Is seen in miniature in every community. Wrong and lawlessness and vice are found crowding their way Into the very heart of the community life. Men w ho should be above It, em brace wrongdoing and give It a pass port into the best society and make it appear respectable by their Indorse ment. So the mandarins who are purchas ing American slaves for their hurjins are no worse than men who sell the virtue of the community for money. I At least tne Lewis ana i.iura lair has given the Portland papers a fer tile field of editorial expression In w hich to glean on those dull and feat ureless days which come to the pro fession, painfully frequent. When all else fails, they can now eulogize each Individual citizen of Portland, In turn, for his active part in making the fair a success. Normally this should fur nish editorial food for 10 years, or un til the entire 120.000 population has been mentioned Individually, as an im portant factor in the fair's success. l 12 Need Not Wear Her Out The drudgery of house work seems never ending to tired-out, dispirited women who suffer from female complaints or Irregularities. In flammation and ulceration of the womb and ovaries cause fearful bearing down pains which are aggravated by much standing on the feet, and lifting necessary In house work. But let no woman despair of relief from this torture. That famous tonic reconstructor of diseased or disordered female organism, LydiaLPinliliamsYegetableCompound has cured more than one million American Women, and it will cure you. When monthly periods are painful or irregular, when back aches and headaches drive out all ambition, Lydla E. Plnkham's Vegetable Compound will bring back health, strength, and happiness. It Gave Me New Life end Vigor Dear Mas. Pinkham: Last spring, while we were moving, I did considerable more work than my strength permitted, and, having mental trouble at the same time, my health broke down completely and I found myself unable to rest or eat. My nerv ous system became shattered and I was pale and emaciated and had to take to my bed. My sister advised me to try Lydia E. Plnkham's Vegetable Compound, and, although I had no faith In patent medicines, I was so miserable that T would take any thing for relief, I found that it made a complete change for the better. Inducing appe tite and restful sleep and Imparting new life and vigor to my entire system. I gained nearly fourteen pounds, my complexion looked fresh and clear, and my best friends were surprised and pleased at the change and could hardly credit the fact that Lydla E. Plnkham's Vegetable Compound had accomplished It. Honor. Lillian Henkt. 1118 31st Ave., South, Seattle, Wash. Director Seattle Dramatic Club. Do not let disease make headway. Write at once to Mrs. Pink ham, Lynn, Mass. Her advice Is free and will contain information of great value to you. ' Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound Cures Where Others Fall A "revenue law" pussed by the last Colorado legislature which assesses a flat tax against corporations capital ized at $10,000 and over und whose aim was to get at hidden property and to keep down fictitious capitalization, has been sustained by the" supreme court of the state. If the national su preme court howls this law over, there are still other ways. The books show that the three Mc- Curdys have drawn out of the Mutua $4,84:1,926 in the last 20 years. No body can compute what the next 20 would have been worth to them had not this fussy Investigation been sprung. BROADER ACQUAINTANCE. If the Oregon Development league has done nothing else In Oregon, It has brought about a broader, better acquaintance among Oregon people. That Is the needful thing. Without an understanding of each others motives and needs, little head way can be made In our community interests. If tho programs discussed by the league have not always been urgently pertinent and warm with vitality, they have at least served a high and noble purpose In bringing people from the fartherest corners of the state to. gether. After men mrct and become ac qunlnted. then they can begin working together In harmony. Bo the dissem ination of acquaintanceship has always been the chief number on the pro grams, no matter what else may have been discussed. Out of their associations will always evolve aome common Issue upon which down or a severe storm, he is prompt- ly fined $50 by the iron-clad rules of the postmaster general, but when the railroad company, carrying much more ! impoi tnnt mall, is not on time once a j week, and is late all the way from one to four hours, not a word is said. The local postmasters are not required to report the railroad delays. There is mighty poor Justice in this, and this does not alter the facts as they now exist. Heppuer Gazette. During the- month of September there was an unusually low number of recruits enlisted for the naval ser vice, owing principally to the heavy cropH In the west and the great de mand for able young men to help the farmers, who offer good pay. After harvesting, however, there will be re newed activity In the recruiting of fices. Navy Bluejacket. WHY IUN THE RACE. The wisdom of the world said unto me, , "Go forth und run, the race is to the brave; Perchance some honor tarrieth for ithce!" "As tarrieth," I said, "for sure, the grave." For 1 had pondered on a rune of roses, Which to her votaries the moon dis closes. The wisdom of the world said: "There nre hays: Go forth and run, for victory Is good. After the stresR of the laborious days. "Yet," said I, "shall I be the worm's sweet food." As I went musing on a rune of roses, Which In her hour, the pale, soft moon discloses. Then said my voices: "Wherefore strive or run, On dusty highways ever, a vnln race? The long night comets, starless, void of sun, What light shall serve thee like her golden face?" For I had pondered on a rune of roses, And knew some secrets which the moon discloses. Ernest Dawson. 1 w KAIUtOADS A HIS EXEMPT. Tho Glory of Maiernity.
