The bearing of children has meant to them the marring of Ehysical beauty of figure, without which autv of face would be of little account. Nothing could be more remote from truth than this ; childbirth is purely a natural phenomenon, accompanied by pain, to be sure, but if properly managed no more harmful in its effects upon the human fores diTine than any other natural function. MOTHER'S FRIEND le essential In the proper management of every case of labor ; it relaxes and softens the abdominal muscles, hereby enabling them to sustain the stretching that they must undergo, and from this eery fact it facilitates their return to normal propor tions after childbirth, and it Is obvious that pain must be greatly lessened frost this very reason. It is a liniment, K is hsnnless, it is potent, it is priceless in its results, it is Mother's Friend, ft joo per bottle at drag if Stores. Soule, dean and director of the ex periment station at Blacksburg, Va., Ill read a papor on "Corn Growing In Virginia," and E. A. bishop, direc tor of agriculture of , the Normal school, Hampton, Va., on "Forage Crops Adapted to Eastern Virginia." The conference will close tomorrow fternoon. "The Lewis and Clark exposition at Portland comes to un end next Sun duy night, liy that time 2,800,000 peoplo will huve visited It. The citi zens of Portland subscribed $400,000 for the fair at Us outset. These po ple as stockholders of the exposition company will get back about 50 cents on the dollar which, in view of the ex perience of other expositions, is a very good showing." This was what J. N. Dolph, assist ant secretary of the exposition and a nephew of the lute United States sen ator, J. N. Dolph, said In an lntervii-v last night, says the San Francisco Px amlner. Mr. Dolph has been in south ern California conferring with the peo pie of the new town of Venice ab"tt removing the shows on the Trail at the exposition to that place. Today lie will confer with the Mechanics' Instl tute people of this city, relative to bringing here a collection of the best exhibits for a local fair under the auspices of the Mechanics' Institute. He says he does not know what the owners of the shows on the Trail will decide to do about going to Venice. Nor can he predict If any of the ex hlbltB will come to San Francisco. Ho says, however, that quite a number the exhibitors would like to come here. Continuing, he went on to say: "The largest attendance any one day at the fair was 86,000. That was on Portland day. It rained hard that day and that was the reason the attend ance fell short of 100,000. The next largest day was July 4, with 64,000 people. With the exception of Ore gon, California had had more people at the fair than any other state. Ful ly 30,000 people from California visit ed the exposition. It Is not an exag geration to say that the Lewis and Clark fair was almost as great a bene fit to California as It was to Oregon, because with few exceptions, all the easterners who visited the fair also visited California." Mr. Dolph says that the expenses of the fair averaged about 14800 a day. Said to Do Great Reformer's Interpre tation of tho Psalms. Berlin, Oct. 13.
