Lewlston Tribune, he says:
"I have been served with a copy of
an application for a writ of review
filed by V. J. McConnell, and also
read his Interview In the Capital Nes
of the 6th, and his comments on the
action of the state board of equaliza
tion. Legally, there is absolutely noth
ing to the writ and McConnell thor
oughly understands that.
It is a very cheap method of po
litical blalckmall that Uncle William
Is trying to work against the board.
and he is doing It under the guise of
an appeal to the courts In order to get
himself a little free advertising. Tne
stale board of equalisation would wel
come the suit of any conscientious clt
lxen who felt himself agrieved by their
work, but it seems a pity that such a
notorious demagogue as McConnell
should take up the time of the courts
simply as a means to exploit himself.
The attack on the constitutionality
of the law of 1901, which by the way
was also a law of 1895 and 1896. when
McConnell was chairman of the board
of equalization, is the plainest kind
of subterfuge In order to pave the way
for an attack upon the state board on
Its assessment of railroads, which as
sessment is the highest ever made in
the history of the state and Is 47 per
cent higher per mile, upon the same
uroperty, than it was when McCon
nell was chairman of the board, not
withstanding that other property in
this state has not been raised over IS

expositions ever hold In this city Is
the National Advertising exposition,
which opened at the Coliseum today.
The exposition Is held under the
auspices of the Chicago Advertising
association and embraces a highly in
teresting display of advertising meth
ods, appliances and schemes.
Every branch of the advertising
business Is represented and there are
novel and original features in every
department. In connection with the
exposition a convention of advertisers
has been called, which will meet to
morrow for the purpose of organizing
all the advertising interests of the
country, including merchants and
manufacturers, who seek publicity for
the sale of their products, as well as
representatives of regular and class
publications, engravers, photographers
and others connected with the craft
that bring consumers ad pronducersj

Ohio Knights Templar Conclave.
Columbus. O., Oct. 11. The Ohio
state conclave of the Knights Templar
opened here today with a parade In
which over BOO uniformed knights of
the order took part. Col. C. S. Am
met was In command and was review
ed by the officers of the Grand Lodge
and a number of Invited guests. The
knights also gave an Interesting fancy
drill. The business of the conclave
will be transacted tomorrow morning
and In the afternoon the members will
be taken on an automobile trip to var
ious points of interest In the city and
vicinity.
