I Because the Lewis and Clark fall-
is drawing to a close Is no reason
for the ). R. & N. company to stop
advertising Oregon, Washington and
Idaho. Instead of slacking the pace,
at which this company has been ad
vertising the northwest In the past
two years. It will make greater efforts
than ever to thoroughly exploit the
resources of this region, In the east.
And the methods to be employed
are the most effective and entertain
ing ever employed by any system in
advertising a country. In fact, the
methods of the O. R. & N. in the
advertising line are unique, and stand
alone In nil the great field of rail
road advertising.
Itinaldo M. Hall, advertising man
ager, will soon start on his annual trip
through eastern Oregon. Idaho and
Washington, collecting farm, range
and manufacturing statistics, from
the farms and -ranges. The most ef
fective booklet ever Issued from the
west was tne rrncticai taias irom
Farmers." issued by the O. R. & N.
company a year ago. The book wah
short Interviews from farmers, edited
and classified by Mr. Hall and sent In
large numbers to the far east.
These talks, giving as they did. the
name and address of the farmers,
were Indisputable evidence of the
richness of this country, and brought
more results than any piece of adver
tising matter ever sent out from the
west. (
About two dozen Cmatilla county
farmers were Interviewed and their
photographs printed In the booklet.
These fanners have received dozens
of letters of tiniulry from anxious
homeseekers in all parts of the coun
try. Indicating the widespread home
hunger throughout the east.
This plan of advertising will be still
inore vigorously pursued In future and
still wider fields of statistics and actu
al facts will be covered, in addition
to photographs snd views of every
prominent man. place and Institu
tion In the west.
The honieseeker rates will continue
In effect after the fair closes and
hundreds of tourists and homeseek
ers will visit Oregon yet this year,
while the cheap rates are In effect.

and with Vancouver and Victoria on

cities in Its western half that will

The Orand Trunk Pacific has broken
ground, and will help greatly to de

Is pushing Its system of branch lines,

In the world. It Is to our own people,
pressing Into this new country with
their skill, energy, and capital, that
a great part of this development will

The real prosperity nf our own

Is doing well, but Its future is to be
greatly affected by these questions of

California Democrats May Nominate
tin Famous Prosecutor.
"Democrats of California are plan
ning to nominate Francis J. Heney for
governor." said A. 3. Crowder of Red
Bluff. California, at the Hotel Port
land yesterday, to the Oregon Dally
Journal. Mr. Crowder served several
terms in the California legislature and
is one of the best known republican
politicians In the state. He is here
vlsllhig the fair.
"If Mr. Heney decides to accept.
Ihene Is no doubt that he will be
chosen to lead the democratic hosts."
continued Mr. Crowder. "And It Is
probable that he would be elected, foi l
ihe inform wave thai Is sweeping the
country has struck the golden west,
and Mr- Heney is the most conspicu
ous of our reformers. Ills fearless
and able prosecutions of the laud
fraud cjises have given him a national
reputation as a graft fighter, and that
Is what the people want at present.
He belongs it the Itoosevclt-Folk-lieneen
lyM f leader.
"California is proud of Mr. Heney
ami he could get almost anything that
be wanted. it is generally conceded
that lie Is the ablest prosecutor that
the stale has produced, and it is
thought that at the conclusion of the
land fraud trials he will he called up
on by President Roosevelt for still
more Important work than lie has yet
undertaken. Politics cut little figure
with men of Mr. llcney's stamp."
Ms. Crowder said that California
had enjoyed a prosperous year and
northern California was on the eve of
an era of great development. Hither
to, be said, southern California had
secured most of the homeseekers from
the east, hut the Immense valleys of
the central and northern part of the
state were beginning to get tnelr
share, ltrge wheat ranches and
Mexican grants are being cut up Into
small farms. Irrigation works are be
ing built and colonization Is being ef
fected upon a large scale. The con
struction of the Western Pacific Is
expected to develop a rich section
hitherto neglected.
