aged the Gray's harbor Jetty works,
which were badly deteriorated on ac

Eight business houses burned at
Montpelier, Idaho, upon which there

started by a fight in a dance hall.
Gilbert Pedersen. a sawmill hand at
Coeur d'Alone, was run down and
killed by a locomotive on the Coeur
d'Alene-Spokane branch. He was
Norwegian, 40 years old.
Two and one-tenth Inches of rain
fell at Tacoma October 3 within 12
hours. Gutters and sewers were in
adequate and hundreds of bnsements
and cellars were flooded.
The tax rate at Spokane this year Is
37 mills, which Includes all city,
school and speclnl levies. The valua
tion of all property In Spokane Is $36.

annual election of officers of the
Washington & Columbia. River rail
way:
The annual meeting of the Washing
ton & Columbia River railway was
held In the general offices of the com
pany yesterday afternoon and elected
a board of trustees for the ensuing
year.
The board of trustees met Immedi
ately after the stockholders' meeting
had adjourned and proceeded to elect
the officers of ahe company for the
next year. The only change In either
of the elections was the substitution
of J. N. Hill as a trustee in the place of
Daniel Iamont. deceased.
The same officers were elected by
the trustees as have been serving the
company in the past. The trustees
elected by the stockholders are How

Reports from Seattle Indicate that
Walla Walla was not the only place
that halt been recently Infested by an
organized bunch of book agents who
plied a lucrative business about the
time of . the opening of the public
schools. Walla Walla people may
profit by the following account of the
manner of Iran: acting business in
Seattle, says the Walla Walla Union.
'About 1600 Seattle women are
victims of a bunco book agent, accord
ing to O. E. Hansen of that city.
According to Mr. Hunsen, an agent
for the owner's of the bouks appears
at residences in the city and offers
four books for $16.7D. Invariably the
agent transacts his business with the
housewife, who he evidently suspects
will not be so careful In her dealings
as her husband would be.
"The wife agrees to take the books
subject to the approval of her hus
band. She Is asked to sign what is
purported to be an order, but which In
fact Is a promissory note puyame in
