I The stock show, which opened on, September 19 for a period of 10 days. proved the crowning feature of the fuir. It was a notable success, being by far the biggest show of the kind ever held In the west, and by far the best attended. During the time It was running, the attendance at the fail showed a daily Increase- over the av erage of about SU00, and the week ending September 24. was the largest in point of attendance of any during the fair period. The past week, with the stock show as an attraction during the first five davs. and Portland day on Saturday, promises to be still bigger, and prob ablv will show a total of 200.000 ad missions for the seven days. On Sun day. September 24. the Sunday attend ance record was bettered by several thousand, when the turnstiles regis tered 17.168 admissions. In spite of the fact that there are more people In Portland now than at ,. iime since the fair opened, there has been no complaint on account of lack of hotel accommodations, or due to exorbitant charges by landlords. This happy state of affairs, It Is cer tain, will continue right up to the close of the fair, because there is room in Portland for a great many more peo ple than reasonably can be expected. The pence Itself deals with the hap penings of a party of Americans and natives of the Island of Pazala. an imaginary Island situated somewhere In the Pacific Ocean, and contains a plot together with a a very pretty little love story both of which afford much comedy element as well as an excellent vehicle for many pretty and catchy musical numbers. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer says of the company: "The little artists of the Williams Opera company are truly wonderful. It Is Impossible to believe that children of their age can give such an Interesting and perfect per formance. ' The little people are In the professional class and still, being children, must and do meet the task." According to all press reports, those who do not witness one or more of the performances of the little people In our city will miss one of the rarest novelties as well as best attractions of the season. The Bnnshee. The banshee Is the domestic ghost or spirit attached to certain Irish or high laud Scottish households and is sup posed to take an interest In the wel- fure of the family generally, and espe cially to wall at the death of any ooc of Its memliors. The banshee Is pic tured In Irish folklore under the form of a little old woman with long hair, which she continually combs, at the same time keeping up an Incessant weeping and walling. The Incident of the comb Is exactly similar to the legend of the German lorelel, a spirit which sings, while the banshee weeps, as an accompaniment. Stewart captured a salmon trout last Sunday In the west fork of Hood river, which measured 2i 1-2 Inches In length. It required two hours and ten minutes to land the prize. Ir. Laruway was along at the time and secured an excellent photo graph of Stewart and the fish.
