A recent bulletin Issued by the geo logical survey of tho United States lives the following details of the work dona In Oregon during the pant year: During June and July examination was made of various plucer deposits. A preliminary examination of the oc currence of heuvy sands ut the mouth of the Columbia rivur In Oregon and on the WaHhlngton xhore wan made by Doctor Day, who also examined the material pumped up by tho dredge operated by the United States engineer corpH at I'll la r Hock, near the mouth of Columbia river. Five carloads were tuken from Clatsop Putins, Seaside, Hammond Htatlon, Wurrenlon and the dredgo ut Pillar Hock. These were sent to the concen trating pavilion at Portland for prac tical tests. Doctor Duy ulso examined the black lands In the large bar of Columbia river opposite Hood River, Ore. A carload of sand was collected here and Is now being further Investigated by J. F. Itatcheldcr. After an Investigation of the sunds at the mouth of the Columbia river, Mr. Oule Joined Prof. J. F. Kemp, ge ologist, ut Grant's Pass, Or., and aided him In the examination of the heavy sands found with the placer mines at Iceland, Wolf ('reek. Grant's Pass and other placers at Klrby and Waldo, Ore.. Keddlng. Hhellcy Creek, the oceun beach at Crescent City, Col., Hmlth river, the mouth of Pistol river, the mouth of Itogue river, Gold Beach. Ilandon, Murshfield, Orovllle, and Ophlr, Ore. Prof. Kemp, assisted by Victor C. Helkes, is now engaged In a similar examination of placer saiuls on the Snake river in Iiluho. HO ATS 'IX) ItKsl'.MK. It. & N. boats can soon be placed In service as the result of the recent rains, says the Lewlxlon Tribune. It is understood to be the purpose of the O. R. & N. to pluce not only the company's boats the Lewlston and Spokune in serv ice, but also the steumer Norma, which will be operated under lease. It is un derstood that Captain Aklns will be in command of the Normu. With the largest gruin tonnage ever stored on the river, and with the work III prog ress on the Iwlston-Rlpurlu line, the boats will have the bushiest season In the history of river navigation. Allen, the lessee of Ilia steam er Mountain Gem, will leave Sunday to confer with the Open River asso elation officers relative to placing the boat In service on the run to the port age. China's National Tree. The tuug-shu, or wood oil, tree Is worthily named the national tree of China. It Is stately In appearance, with smooth green hark and wide spreading branches, affording a fine shade. It lielongs to the ctiphorblacac, or spurge, family, of which the castor oil plant Is a member. It hears a fruit resembling a shell hark hickory nut, but as large us a small orange. Each uut contains three triangular seeds sim ilar to small Brazil nuts. The oil Is pressed from these seeds, and the ref use Is used as a fertilizer. The oil Is used principally for polishing woodwork- and dressing leather. Consld alile quantities are exported. The wood of the tung-suu Is used for making mu sical Instruments, fine boxes and the framework of small houses. It is free from the ravages of Insects. Aa Odd Wrratllna- Match. The extraordinary custom of wres tling for a bottle prevails at Halluton, in Leicestershire, England, where the villagers have to brace themselves for action 00 Easter Monday In order to retain possession of a plot of ground left to them in the good old days. The bottle Is a large wooden one, bound round with Iron rims, and contains ale. It is thrown on the ground that Hie men of the neighboring vllluge of Melbourne may try to wrest it from the inhabitants of Halluton. When the buttle Is over, the victors drink the contents. The same bottle has done duly for nearly half a century. As a preliminary to the great struggle, two ueat pies and two dozen penny loaves are scrambled for. The Hrallr "iood Man." A certain editorial writer on the staff of a Texas newspaper was inclin ed to dllatorlness during certain peri ods of conviviality and caused there by much concern In the breast of the foreman of the composing room just prior to the moment when the forms must go to press. 1 But the writer was a part owner cf of the paper and could not well be discharged, since he occupied the po sition of managing editor. Many times the editorials were late and the paper delayed In going to press, but the delinquent writer always mado good after a fashion. Finally he hit upon a scheme when he was called upon at the lost moment for "copy," that may, In all justice to expediency, be called the art of genius. The hour was very late and no lead ing editorial had gone to the com posing room. In frantic haste the foreman sent for the editorial writer, and only after half an hour was he loculetl In a nearby saloon and much the worse for his dalliance there. He grasped the Intelligence that he had forgotten his leading column and made his way as fast as he could to his office. Snatching a piece of copy Taper In one hand, he caught up a copy of the New York Times with the other and from It clipped .1 leading editorial, which he pasted nn the pa per. Then he wrote: v "We cannot agree with the New York Times when It says:" The editorial of the Times was copied, the Texas paper went to presf. nnd the editor back to the saloon. New York Times. EVIDENCE NOME'S WEALTH. New Mining Districts Show Great Prospect Gohl Exhibited at Lewis and Clark lair From itampart. Increasing evidence of the mineral wealth of the Nome district In Alaska Is shown In the exhibits which recent ly have arrived from the far north and are on exhibition In the Nome section of the territorial wing of the United States government building at the Lewis and Clark exposition. H. T. Thumm, a well known Alaska mining man, came down from the north a few days ago with an assort ment of nuggets that surprised even people who are familiar with the won derful wealth of the northlund. Most of the nuggets were small, and some of the gold was In the form of coarse dust, but in all, Mr. Thumm hud about $3000 worth of metal. The gold was brought to the exposition from the Itampart City district, on the Youkon, near the mouth of the Tanana river. ' Ordinary placer mining hus been carried on In this district, but recent rich strikes have resulted In the In stallation of new and expensive ap paratus, so that from now on hydrau lic mining will be practiced there.
