R. W. Rodda, of Seattle, has secur

At Pupallup, Wash., Peter Phllben
has picked from one acre of canes

Near Harrington, Wash., James He
Carty, a threshing crew cook, with a
butcher knife, Inflicted several severe
wounds upon William Granfield, the
machine tender. The assault had
very little or no provocation. Mc
carty escaped and is being pursued.
Granfield will recover.
Monday will be October 2, and the
last day on which those who have
already paid ono-hnlt their taxes can
make the second payment. Those
who do not make the second payment
by the evening of that day will there
by become delinquent and subject to
the -penalty imposed In such case.
Under the present law there Is a 10
per cent penalty imposed as soon as
taxes become delinquent, and also In
terest Is charged at the rate of 1 per
cent a' nionth.
Inquiry at the sheriff's office shows
that while there are quite a number
who have1 not yet made the second
payment, the bulk of the unpaid tax
Is owed by oeoiile who have r.n H n
part of their taxes at all. However,
mere is very little even of this, for
the taxes have been retnaikably we'd

road tax there would be but about
320.000 unpaid on this year's roll.

already been paid, and of that which

owed by the O. R. & N. company for
this year's tax. Consequently, there

However, according to Deputy
Funk, all of the tax that Is now un
paid will not become delinquent, for
much of It will be paid before the
time Ts up. and many villi pay with
the penalty added after the time Is
up.
In the payments that have been
made so far this year there has been
$100,1.1 paid as penalties for delin
quency while rebates to the amount
of 34500 have been given.
CLASH OVER WATER RIGHTS.
Colorado and California Dispute Over
Reservoir Site.

Interstate difficulties, growing out
of the divergent Interests, may result
between Colorado and California over
the question of erecting dams across
the Colorado river In Colorado for the
purpose of furnishing irrigation for
arid lands In Colorado, Arizona and
parts of California.
The Los Angeles realty board and
the chamber of commerce at their
regular meeting authorized the ap
pointment of committees to wait upon
United States Senator Flint and Con
gressman McLnchlnn for the purpose
or enllHtlng their support in the mat
ter. It Is charged that the Denver,
Northwestern and Pacific railroad,
better known as the Moffatt road.
which Is now building from Denver to
Salt Lake, Is endeavoring, through the
courts of the state of Colorado, to pre
vent trie construction of proposed res
ervolrs along the Colorado river in
Grand Canyon, Brown's Park and
northwestern Colorado, urging as its
reason for so doing the railroad's re
qulrements for rights of way.
It Is the contention of the local com
mercial boilles that the prevention of
the building of the dams would de
stroy the Irrigation plans of the gov
ernment looking to the reclamation of
about 2.000,000 ucres of arid lands In
the southwest, a large portion of which
is directly tributary to Los Angeles.

Antone Vey and wife returned Wed
nesday evening from a few days' visit
at the 1-ewls and Clark fair.
C. S. Howard and family, who have
spent the greater part of the summer
on the John Day looking after their
stock, returned Sunday. Mr. Howard
disposed of his cattle to local buyers,
and expects to engage In some other
business in the future, possibly farm
ing.
Mrs. Stover went to Alba Thursday
on business, having received word that
she was loser in a fire at that place.
Seth Richardson returned Friday
from a two days' sojourn at Portland
Mrs. Bert Wisdom who has been
suffering from a "very painful affec
tion of the eye for some time, Is im
proving.
Mrs. Heard is quite 111 ut her home
on West Alta street.
Mrs. M. Baker and her brother have
gone to Portland to visit relatives and

Tom Hopper and wire were in town

Mr. and Mrs. Pat Klne are no longer
"hay seeds." having moved to the
Cunningham residence on West Alta

L. Dunlap is building two modern
up-to-date cottages on Pine street for
rent. There Is a growing demand for
such buildings in this locality, Mr.
Dunlap having applicants for his
houses as soon as comploted. Other
property owners would do well to fol
low Mr. Duulap's example, when
building, and thereby attract the best
class of renters.
Miss M,ary Rothrock left for Eu
gene Friday evening to resume her
studies In the university at that place.

says a Portland paper.
Mr. Brlsbee will come from La Jun
ta, Colo., and the purpose of his visit
Is that of investigating the Oregon
country, particularly that lying along
the coast and In the northern portion
of the state between the Pacific and
the. Columbia river.
The heralding of Mr. Brlsbee's com
ing has set railroad prognosticate at
work and It Is said that there will be
developments with reference to the
property of the Astoria & Columbia
river rallroaij and that It Is the Inten
tion of the'-i3anta Fe to fulfill the
promise do build up the coast from
Humboldt bay and center Its energies
on the -prbgrcss Of Astoria.
At Nehoue, New Caledonia, the
American ship Roanoke, while load
ing, was destroyed by fire, together
