Sept. 20. The fate of "Old Ironsides," as the antiquated frigate Constitution has been called, still hang In the tuliinre. About a week ago flie news was rcs't-ivd from Boston that the old ship was filling with water and was doomed to speedy decay. This bit of news suggested to Mr. James Matthews, a Brooklyn merchant, the Idea to make an effort of saving the historic ship from the Junk pile and at the same time, do something that would carry his fame far beyond the limits of Greater New York. He sent a telegram to the sec retary of the navy, asking him to con sider an offer to buy the Constitution through a fund to be raised by Brook lyn school children. It was the Idea of Mr. Matthews, to purchase the ven erable warship, bring it to Brooklyn and preserve It in some suitable place for future generations. The matter has not yet been decid ed, so far as the navy department is concerned, but It is doubtful that Mr. Matthews will succeed In carrying out his plan. In the first place, the pat riotic societies of Boston, which here tofore had paid no particular attention to the condition of the old frigate, suddenly nave become Interested In It and Intend to play the dog in the manger. Hut, even If the people of Bosion should not raise any obteetlo.is to I he removal of the Constitution, there Is little prospect that the hlp w ill i vcr be brought to New y.-.rk. The ship is in such a bad condition that It would be impossible to tow It to this city. It would founder before it had been towed a block. Amusing to Outrddcrs. An amusing wai is being waged Just now In Brooklyn. For a long lime there Iris been cor.tdderuble rivalry between the merchants and shop keepers on the north and those on the south side of Fulton street.. For several months the merchants or. the north side have had placards, leading. "This Is the Bargain Side," displayed In their windows. The mer chants on the south side hit upon an Ingenious plan to conteract this claim of their rivals. They advertised that every morning, between 9 and 10 the "Bargain Man" would walk up and down on the "Bargain Side of Fulton Street." meaning In this cas the south side. He would carry a pocket ful of silver dollars, nnd every quarter of an hour or half hour he would turn around sharply and present a dollar to the first person he finds be hind him. provided that person is not a boy. The effect of that announcement was magical. Thousands of people thronged the south side of the street. wliile the north side of the street was deserted nearly all day. The police reserves had to be called upon to pre vent ths crowd from mobbing the "Bargain Man." It Is expected that the merchants of the other side will send out a man who will give away IT. bills. Tammany Favors It. The statement of Charles F. Mur phy, the leader of Tammany, that Tammany Hall favored municipal ownership, was really quite superflu ous. There Is nothing new in that. Kverybody knows that Tammany Hall Is In favor of any kind of ownership, provided It Is the owner. Some foolish persons have asked, why Tammany Hall has never made an altempt to bring about municipal ownership. How absurd? Does not Tammany Hall own the town? Is there anything in Greater New York that Tammany does not own or con trol? From the lowest gambling house, barrel house nnd den of Inl- oulty to the street railway and other monopolies, everything is controlled by Tammany Hall. Why should the braves exert themselves to bring about a condition which already exists? The only difference it would make is that now Tammany Is robbing the people Indirectly, while under munlC' ipal ownership It would do so directly The final result would remain un changed. Gorilla Died on Shipboard. The death on the high sea of the female gorilla which was tp be placed in the menagerie of the Bronx Zoo. is a severe loss to New York. Had the animal survived the violent attack of sea sickness and perhaps, home sick ness which caused Its death, New Yo would have had the distinction of be ing the only city In the world owning a full-grown gorilla. These monkeys are extremely rare and all previous nttempts to acclimate them in northern latitudes have fail ed. Several specimens were broughj. to riurope, put old not live very long. The female gorilla which had been intended for the Bronx Zoo collection was Insured for f 500, It will be stuff. ed and exhibited In that form. Crime on the Increase. Notwithstanding the assertion of Commissioner MrAdoo to the contra ry, the number of crimes of every kind seems to be on the Increase In New York. Every day crimes against the person and against property are reported In appalling numbers, but onlv once In a great while, and then only accidentally, the perpetrators of the crimes nre apprehended by the police. t Is true, the police authorities arc never at a loss to find some excuse for their Inability of discovering the criminals, but the fact remains, that the thieves, murderers and other crim inals are continuing their activity, and that the public safety Is becom ing more seriously threatened every week. There Is mighty little consola tion In the explanations that there Is a good cause for the Inefficiency of the metropolitan police department. The depart ment of commerce and Uibor has Just given out a monograph on the coffee trude of the world, which will be printed in the forthcoming Issue of the Monthly Summary of Commerce, published by that department. The report Bhows an enormous increase in the cultivation and consumption of this stimulant, which is one of the most striking features of the last quar ter of a century. According to the report the center of production of cof fee, which is an Indigenous plant of Africa, may be said to have been transferred to South and Central America, about three-fourths of th world's supply being furnished at present by Brazil. The terms Mnch.il arid Java, which In olden times Indl- I cuted the source of origin, have be- come mere characteristics of uualltvi and blend. It is an Interesting fact that the rate of consumption wherever coffee has become part of the popular diet, tends to increase continually. The con sumption In the United States has In creased enormously and at present the Americans consume between two fifths and one-half of all the coffee produced. The statistics show that the per capita consumption of coffee In some of the principal countries for 1903 was as follows: United States, 10.79; United Kingdom. .71; Germany. 6.8; France. 6.27; Holland. 14.39.
