Our complete stock of fall hats are here. Boston store. Three thousand millions nf dollars Thut is the arithmetical measure of the commerce of the orient, says special dispatch from Washington Thus it Is summed up by tho official statistician of the government's de purtment of statistics. And that commerce Is said to be "yet small" as compared with the world's commerce. The population of Asia and Oceun- lea Is 850.000.000. while that of all other parts of the world combined Is only about 750.000,000. Its land area is 18.000,000 square miles, while that of other :arts of the world 34,000,000; yet the commerce of the orient Is but a paltry $3,000,000,000, while that of other parts of the world is $19,000, 000.000. So It Is : een that the average per capital commerce In the orient Is $3 a year, while the average per capita for the rest of the world Is $27 a year, The trouble hus been luck of rail roads. This lack Is soon to be supplied is being supplied. The orient hus less than one-tenth of the world's railways, though it has more than ono-half the world's popu lation and a third of Its area. It Is Interesting to note thut the two countries In this orient which have most railways Japan and India have the largest Increase of trade. In dia has about 28.000 miles of ralwuy. Japan has about 4500 miles of rail way. The foreign commerce of China, with 400,000,000 Industrious people (but no railways), has grown but $100,000,(100 since 1870: that of India with 300,000.000 people, and a system of railways, has grown $268,000,000; and that of Jasan, with only 45,000 000 and a system of railways, hUB grown $215,000,000. And how does the United Stat'S stand to share in this commenia prize of the orient? All the countries and Islands of Asia and Oeeanica now Import buy from the rest of the world about as much as the United States exports annually. Our share in that market ut present Is about 8 oer cent. But the United States Is better situ ated than any occidental country to share In, and increase that trade. , At present the United States sells .o the Orient about $100,000,000 worth of goods a year, whilo Europe s-ds $600,000,000. Hut tho records of the past 10 years show that we are gain ing much more rapidly In this trade than uny other nation. The imports from China, Japan and Australia from all European coun tries combined showed an increase In 1903 of but $45,000,000 as compared with 1900, while the Increase In tm portatlons by those countries from tho United States alone In the same period was $49,000,000, thus showing that our gain in their Import trade was ac tually greater than the gain of till Europe combined. Our purchases, too. from the orient have grown since 1870 from less than $32,000,000 to $190,000,000 in 1901. We take from them large quantities of raw silk, tea, hemn. jute, tin, goat skins, etc.. and we send them raw an.l manufactured Iron and steel, flour meats and rice. .No country has the natural advnii' tages which are possessed by the Unit' ed States for securing this oriental trade. In the command which Ameii can merchants have of the Pacific ocean. Our national frontage on the Pacific Is 12.500 nautical miles, while that of the United Kingdom Is 10,000, of Russia 6000. Japan 5000 and China about 3000. In addition to this we are about be ginning tho construction of the lath mlan canal, which, when comple'ed, will furnish direct water communlca tlon between the orient and our pro ducing manufacturing sections In the cast and south. Cotton, Iron and breadstuffs will go by this route to the orient, touching at the ports of Seattle, San Francisco and Tacoma. By this means alone the United States would increase her oriental ex ports from $100,000,000 to $500,000,- 000 per annum. Trustees' Meeting Tonight.
