Sept. 2 .Santa Fe railroad officials report a systematic scheme of robbery being practiced in Colora do by operators acting as ticket agents and by ticket ugents proper. Several thousands ot dollars has been lost by the railroad In the past few months. James Foster, night operator at Lamar, Is now tinder arrest charged with purloining railroad tickets. A night operator, said to ho Charles Jennings, is under arrest at Las Ani mas on a similar charge. Traveling Auditor W. Foster of the Santa Fe passed through Denver on his way to Lamar, and says the thefts are on the increase. While all the op erators and ticket agents nre under bond, the Santa Fe is having dlfficul- to in keeping "tab" on them. The method is to remove tickets from the bottom of the ticket packet, sell the tickets and destroy the stubs. The proceeds, of course, are pocket ed. Since the railroads anticipate heavy travel to the G. A. R. convention, they say that the operators who are dishonest will have better opportuni ties to steal. When the situation be came known to the general offices of the Santa Fe, the traveling audit or was sent to this state to make the rounds of the stations In Colorado. Operator Foster Is said to have se sured several hundred dollars of the Santa Fe's money. The travel from Lamar Is light, and It would take con siderable time to secure $2011. for if the daily revenues did not average well, an Investigation would have be gun sooner. Foster's arrest is said to have been due to the fact that the revenues from his office were lower than they should have been. The Santa Fe officials say they will prosecute all offenders with severity. The practice has become so general, not only among some or the Colorado operators, but among eastern agents of the Santa Fe, that the railroad is determined to stop It. A few days ago an agent in Chicago was arrested for exchanging transportation for theatre tickets. The officers of the road say a fever of dishonesty seems to Jutve been communicated to a cer tain class of men in the employ of the company. IXR FREE TRIP TO HAWAII.
