The annual school report, which was given out from the office of Sup erluteiident Ackermun Wednesday shows that there were 4210 -more children of school age In the state and 24 less teachers this year than last. The decrease In the number of teachers is due principally to two causes. One of these is the favt that owing to a scarcity of teachers, some of the districts In the Isolated and re mote parts of the state were unable to secure teachers. Another Is the plan of uniting dls trlcts for the purpose of securing bet ter schools. The total number school districts ill the state this year is only 2161 us against ,2169 last year. The total number of persons of school age is 152,930, while the num ber of registered pupils Is 108,036. A total of 4022 teachers are employ ed in the state, of which number 817 are males and 3205 are females. The number of applicants for teach ers' certificates examined during the year was 1830, as against 1390 last year. As only 343 of these applicants failed it does not look as though there would be a shortage of teachers the coming year. The number of persons of school age in the state who are not attend ing any school is S7.247, while 6066 are attending private schools. The average daily attendance in the pub lic schools is 216,142. The number of legal voters for school purposes In the state at ths time of making this report Is 110,365. There are now 2228 school houses In the state, of which number 109 were bulllj this year. The average number of months of school throughout the state was 6.05. The amount of cash on hand at the time of making the last report was $418,025.68. The total amount of re ceipts during the year. Including t'ftli balance was $2,627,985.66 The dls bursements amounted to $124,644.44 thus leaving a balance on hand of $382,828.79. Tile estimated value of school houses and grounds Is $4,138, 54 9. The average monthly salary of male teachers Is $55.69, while that of females is $43.50. K)R CITY OWNERSHIP. Scuttle People to Open an Active Re form Campaign. Seattle, Sept. 1. Judge John E. Humphries has been arranging a list of speakers to take part In advocating municipal ownership of tho public utilities nnd will furnlah speakers throughout the city wherever desired. Among them are Judge James Mc Neny. Fred H. Peterson, Herkimer Johnson, John It. Parker, Frederick Burch, John C. Murphy, A. J. Speck ert, W. T. Scott, Joe Smith and Nich olas Schmltt, to which list others will be added from time to time. It Is proposed to hold two mass meetings In Germnnla hall about Sep tember 15. uftcr which mass meetings will he held In different parts of the city wherever convenient places can be secured for speaking. A municipal league will be organized with officers In each of the precincts of the city. Mr. Humphries claims that the mu nicipal ownership sentiment is grow ing and tho people are now favoring cheap telephones, from $24 per year down instead of $72 and $36 for office and house 'phones; that tho laboring man, the mechanic and the clerk are favoring a 1-cent car fare for work Ingmen nights and mornings, and a regular 2-cent fare for all persons on street car lines; that Instead of ship ping out of tho city $600,000 net prof- Its on telephones and $1,500,000 profit by tho Seattlo Electric company, the people arc favoring keeping their money at homo and having low water rates, electric light rates, telephone rates and street car fares. . j "DEATH VALLEY" SCOTT. humor, for he walked over to the of flee and gave Clerk Angevlne a $20 gold piece and a $25 order for cigars to Clerk Brownell. If you see him, tell htm I'll be around the hotel most of the day. Tell him to come down and hear the music. Say, like this music. It braces me up like champagne. I don't know but what I'll figure on taking a small sized orchestra down to the desert when I go back. San Francisco beats them all for wine, music and automo biles, with Los Angeles a close second. People are not as greedy here as In new York and Chicago, and give a fellah like me half a chance. Now that's going some for this town's good name. Los Angeles' Just as good that way, too. You've won me here, but I won't go back on the south." "Scotty's" wife has not appeared on the scene as yet, and the Death Valley man says he'll wait a day or two be fore arranging for a family reunion.
