Mr. LaFontalne, who is an enthusi astic horseman, says he saw the fin est driving and saddle horses and the finest turnouts there that he ever Baw anywhere. All the little places Rear Los An geles are building up rapidly and be says it will be but a few years until the city and Its dozens of delightful suburbs will be one continuous city of business blocks and magnificent residences. George, their eldest son, will return to Loa Angelea soon to attend school during the coming year. The family is delighted to return to Oregon. KNOWS NOTHING OF THE CRIME. Degenerate George Marshall of Port land, Implicates Himself In the Van Dran. Case. A degenerate of Portland, named George Marshall, who wrote a Utter implicating himself in the Van Dran murder mystery, Is now In Jail in that city, and will be tried for extor tion. He wrote a letter to Kaspar Van Dran hinting that he would keep some alleged secrets for a price, and at the same time left another letter on his person where It could be found by de tectives when he was searched, and then called up the police office and told where he could be found stand ing on the street He was arrested by detectives and severely questioned and at first it was thought he possibly knew something of the crime. However, after he had been In jail for a few days he con fessed that he had written the letters and then caused himself to be arrested purposely, in hopes that he would be hanged for the crime, as he was tired of living. He gave Portland papers an Inter view In which he recited his misera ble career of petty crime and said that as he seemed doomed to such a worth less life he would end It by being hanged for this murder, but after be ing in Jail for a time and given an opportunity to meditate, he changed his mind and confessed to his wilful act of implicating himself In the mat ter. Corbett Tied Putann Up to Sober Him and Afterward Patmva Missed Uls Watch, Which He Found Had Been Pawned on Cottonwood Street Corbett Claims Ills Wife Found the Watch and That He Had No Knowl edge of Its Real Ownership. Poter Corbett, an Indian of the res ervation, wus locked In the county juil about 5:30 last evening, charged with having robbed Allan Patawa, a fellow tribesman, of a wntch. Cor bett was arrested yesterday and brought before Commissioner John Halley, Jr. Ho will be given an ex amination soon, and unless he can prove his Innocence, will he held for the federal grand Jury. According to the story as told by Patawa he became drunk on Sat up day, August 12, and as ho was going home he passed by Corbett's place on the reservation. While there be was taken by Corbett and tied up and left so over night The next morning he says he awoke and was sobered. However, when he looked for hlB watch it was gone. He suspected Corbett of having stolen It, and he made a search of the Pendleton pawn shops to find his timepiece. This he did In one of the places on Cotton wood street and according to the owner of the shop it had been pawned by Corbett for the sum of $1.25. gallon last year at El Paso had prom ised to throw Its strength to Boise this year, and although this was de nied most strenuously by the Donvnr workers, It had Its effeot. And all through the discussion this morning the statoment, "Denver has had It twice before; give Boise a chance," fell upon the ears of the disinterested delegations with unmistakable effect When the name of Utah was called In the roll of nominations and John Henry Smith arose and offered the entiro ballot of tho big Utah delega tion, Denver saw her chances paling Into the mists. A recess of five minutes was taken to enable the delegates to get together and prepare their votes, and when the congress was called together to ballot, Boise City's victory was complote. Al though Denver fought hard for the next congress. It lost the battle In good grace. A very pretty wedding took place Wednesday evening August 23. 1905, at the Rynearson home Just north of town, when Miss Edna Rynearson was united In marriage with Mr. H. H. Gaunt, of Pendleton, formerly of McMinnville, Rev. J. Franklin Day, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiated. Miss Rynearson was raised in Un ion county, where she Is well and favorably known. Mr. Gaunt belorigs to one of the leading Yamhill county families, having many warm friends in that section. The Evening Telegram gives the following account of the choice of Boise City as the next meeting place of the National Irrigation congress: With a storm of ayes and with not an opposing vote, the 14th annual ses sion of the National Irrigation con gress went for Boise City, Idaho, shortly after noon today. Donvor was the only opponent in the field, but at the 11th hour, and without raising a protest by ballot, the capi tal of Colorado surrendered the prize she has claimed since the session be gan, and when Governor Pardee an nounced that the time had come to ballot, Major Frank C. Goudy of Den ver, who had placed that city In nom ination, arose and, holding aloft an Idaho badge, said: "I now move you, Mr. Chairman, that Boise City be selected by acclam ation."
