Miss Agnes Fletcher and Miss Ru by Whlttemore of this city have been nominated for thq trip, so far, and others will probably be named by friends. The trip will be given next February to the eight girls In Ore gon securing the largest number of votes, each portion of the state being in separate districts and each district voting upon Its own candidates. Mr. Brewbaker will remain for several days In the Interest of the contest. FLAX INDUSTRY NO MORE. If Pendleton and Umatilla county show the required Interest In the mat ter, the National Good Roads associa tion will send a special construction train here about September 15 to con struct a mile of model good roads near the city, wherever the people select a site for the road. Wellington C. Loucks, organizer for the National Good Roads associa tion was In the city last night, on his way to Spokane, for which city he left this morning and say that the construction train of the association Is now at work in Wyoming, with considerable work ahead of It, but that It will come to this county In September. If arrangements are made for it Mr. Loucks and Col. William A. Bradburn, engineer for the national association will be In the city soon to confer with the county court and the Commercial association In refer ence to the construction of this road and upon their coming and the re sults of their visit will depend the ac tion of the road builders. The good roads train has been em ployed all summer to the construc tion of samples of model road In the central states and Is now working to the west. The work in Wyoming haa been extensive and there is a heavy demand for model roads In Utah, also, and the train will proceed westward as rapidly as possible. When here last June, the national association promised to bring the train here nnd construct a mile of model road anywhere the county or cltv might select, and Mr. Loucks says the promise will be kept. At 2:. 10 this afternoon the wedding of Lewis Ruglns and Miss Blanche Jacques occurred at the residence of Mrs. Cora Case on Willow street. The ceremony was performed by Rev. M. V. Howard, pastor of the South Meth odist church, and the rooms were tastefully decorated with flowers and evergreens. Followng the ceremony a wedding dinner was served, and this evening the couple will leave for Portland upon their wedding tour. The wedding was a quiet one and only relatives and a few Intimate friends of both parties were present. Among those from out of town was Mrs. J. A. Smith of Portland, sister of the groom, who came up from Port land to attend the wedding. Mr. Smith remained In Portland nnd will meet the party on their arrival there. FARM HAND UNDER ARREST. LOVELL GETS FIVE YEARS. Fas Young Journalist who Robbed Clark Wood Goes to pen In Washington, Harry Lovell. or Burl Haggard, I whichever name happens to suit his purposes, who robbed Clark Wood of $45 a year ago when left In charge of the Weston Leader, has Just been sentenced to five years In the Wash ington penitentiary for stealing $42 from the cash register of a saloon in which he was working at Oolifux, two months ago. The charged With Robbery Watch Re covered, "Diamond" Still Missing. Harry McCloary, a farm hand who has been working for William Schwartz for some time, is now In the county Jail charged with having stolen a watch from Al Amsberry. Tho ar rest was made yesterday afternoon by Officer Stevens, who had been in formed previously that the prisoner had been seen attempting to pawn the watch In n saloon. After having ar rested the man the officer sought out Amsberry. the vctlin, and found him drunk In a room of the Queen Lodging house. After becoming sober he iden tified the watch as his, but could give no explanation of how he lost it. Ams berry Is from Pilot Rock, and came to the town yesterday morning and soon after became drunk. Two thousand choice botanical specimens, carefully prepared for study and preservation Is an educa tional asset not possessed by many western schools, If by any aside from Pendleton academy, and so rare is the collection sent by this academy to the Lewis and Clark fair, that the University of Oregon, the leading in stltution In the state has asked to borrow the exhibit for study and comparison, after the exposition closes. Bleakney, prln clpal of the ocademy was In Portland he was beselged by botanists from all over the United States with Inquiries as to the value and scope of the acad emy exhibit at the fair, nil express ing surprise at the collection. The chief portion of the collection whs made by William Cuslck. the vet eran botanist of Union, who spent 2S years In the quest for rare specimens of the flora of Oregon. Two years ago he presented his collection, con sisting of 1500 specimens, to the academy, nnd to this has been added about 500 specimens by the students and teachers of the ucailemy. It has not been decided yet whether it will he loaned to the University of Ore gon. as It belongs to the students of the academy and the trustees feel that they should he consulted In the matter. Mr. Clark Is In the cattle business in that section and says cattle of all kinds are In cx- cellcnt condition, but prices are si low that very few sales are reported.
