"Why don't the farmers of the Hoise
valley make a trial of tho Campbell
system of agriculture?" remarked M.
J. Ncill of Greeley, Col.. Just before
leaving liolse Monday night for the
fair city, says the Boise Statesman.
"What is the Campbell system, Mr.
Nelll?" was the query In turn, "if
there Is anything In advanced agri
cultural methods that tho farmers of
tills valley have not yet learned, they
want to know about It and that with
out delay."
"What is known as the Campbell
system Is really the latest develop
ment in arid lund farming. It Is
new even to Colorado, where theex
periments that have evolved the sys
tem have been In progress but for the
past three or four years; but enough
there has been accomplished as a re
sult of the experiments to demon
strate the success of the scheme. In
a word the system is intense surface
cultivation of the ground, no water
other than what the natural rainfall
affords, and in the case of some pro
ducts a crop every other year."
Mr. Nelll then told something of
what had been done with the system
In the arid fields of Eastern Colorado,
where the natural rainfall Is but lit
tle If any heavier than in the Boise
valley, one year with another. It has
been found that constant cultivation
of the surface of the ground conserves
the moisture, and with a variety of
farm products, where the rain in
spring gave a fair start, splendid
crops have been harvested, with no
lale irrigation whatever.
The Greeley district Is one of the
richest In all Colorado, and the water
supply there, as In many another sec
tion of the west, Is short in midsum
mer. The farmers, truck-growers and
fruit men of that place have for years
hern testing schemes' for getting the
most out of the available water sup
ply, with the result that the Campbell
system has come to be recognized as
somelhlng to be depended upon.
There great orchards are to be
seen, yielding almost every year
bountiful harvests of all kinds of or
chard fruit, with no other water than
that furnished by the rainfall In the
spring, supplemented by surface cul
tivation of the ground through the
summer months.
"If some of the Boise valley far
mers could take a trip through our
part of Colorado, and see how much
can be done with a very little water,
It would be an eye-opener for them.
There's about as much in water econ
omy as In water supply."
It appears that the term "Campbell
system" used In this connection Is
something of a misnomer. It seems
that the Idea of surface cultivation of
land as a moans of getting the most
possible out of the available water
came originally from some part of In
dia, the land of famine, where efforts
are being made by the government
for the extension of the system.
A thrifty Scot, with a barren farm
and little water at his command, be
gan In a small way the experiments
that have come to mean so much for
the agriculture of the state. The re
sult was that his name has come to
be associated with the system. He did
not originate the system, but he ap
plied it, and honor for that is accord
ed him.
Stirring the surface breaks the ca
pillaries and Interrupts the action of
capillary attraction by which the
moisture Is drawn to the surface to be
dissipated by evaporation. Some of
our people are alive to Its Importance.

love for tho strenuous official. The
good citizens, who are friends of law
and order, on the other hand, have
tho greatest admiration for Mr. Jo
rome and have given him many assur
ances of their support should ho de
sire to run for mayor ut the next mu
nicipal election.
Mr. Jeronio evidently does not think
the present time, opportune for his
candidacy for mayor. In the first
place he docs not think that his work
as district attorney is complete to sat
isfy his own ambition and, In tho sec
ond place, ho does not wish to ruin
his chances for the future by enter
ing upon a campaign, the outcome of
which would bo decidedly doubtful.
He has conic out with a statement
that he does not wish to run for
mayor, but does want to be re-olect-ed
for another term as district attor
ney. To keep himself free from all
partisan entanglements Mr. Jerome
proposes to run as Independent can
didate, oa the exponent of the law
abiding citizens, Irrespective of party
affiliations. His friends have taken
the cue and are rallying nobly to his
support. The nntt-Taminnny element,
however, has not given up hope yet,
to change Mr. Jerome's decision and
to Induce him to accept the nomina
tion for mayor.
The personal friends of the district
attorney do not believe that he can
be persuaded to run for mayor, but In
outside circles there Is a lingering
hope that Mr. Jerome will change his
mind when the nomination Is offered
him In a manner that would convince
him that the Independent voters of
the city were really anxious that he
should make a try for the mayoralty.

has been prepnring its roadbed for
wider gauged tracks.
From Mound House to Reno on the
Central Pacific, D. O. Mills' Virginia

a broad-gauge line, which is part of
the through route between Reno and
Tonopah. In a couple of weeks the
Southern Pacific will finish a cut-off
between Hazen on its line Just east
of Iteno. and Fort Churchill, on its
Carson and Colorado branch. When
that Is done all Tonopah business
will go by way of Hazen, which will
cut out the Virginia and Truckee a
part of the Tonopah route and give
the Southern Pacific all of the haul
from Its main line at Hazen south

Furthermore, the Tonopah Railroad
company will In a few days complete
the extension of Its line from Tonopah
