In the first half of the sixteenth century It was noticed that gold ore from the Spanish mines In Darlen sometimes Included grains of a white metal which possessed the qualities of what are called the noble metals, but there were no existing records to throw light upon the matter. As the Spaniards prohib ited Its export. It was another hun dred years lefore the ifetal began to Gad Its way into Europe, and it was not till about 1750 that Its properties were really investigated. In 1001 M. Berthelot, the famous French savant, made un astonishing discovery In Egypt. He was examining a nietai box, once the property of an Egyptlau queen of the seventh century B. C, and In it he found a plate which at first sight he took to be silver, but afterward turned out to be made of an alloy of gold and platinum. Doubt less the platinum came from the allu vial deposits of the upper Nile. SaaasasatBal ins r Classified Advertisements BRING CERTAIN and QUICK RESULTS 1 PHYSICIANS. J. A. Iu looking over a book of travels in France, written more than 100 years ago, I uauiu across an Interesting bit about the way of catching frogs for market. The author mentions the fact that frogs were sold by the hun dred In the markets, that they were classed as fish and that only the hind quarters were eaten. But to come to the mulu point be says: "To catch the frogs the fisherman puts one of them in a glass vessel, which be dips Into a brook, on which the creature, finding It self In so strange a situation confined In the midst of water In a transparent machine, or, I may say, Invisible pris on, begins to croak most melodiously, and by bis croaking makes multitudes of other frogs come to Him on every side, us If to rescue their companion, wlieu the frog fisher valiantly seizes bis prey." The advocates of ship subsidy have been startled and disgruntled by a special report of Lincoln Hutchinson, a graduate of tne university ui x, fornla, and an agent of the govern ment who is studying trade and com merce betwen the South American countries and the United States, says a Washington special to the Exam iner. The gist of a most elaborate review of the situation by Mr. Hutchinson Is that Ihe United StaleB does not need more ships to conduct Its business -in, smith American ports, such as those of the Brazil pattern. Mr. Hutchinson makes that the great wholesale South America dealing goods, supply their wants a long ways head and cannot be Inconvenienced by a lack of American or British or n nihrr merchant marine. The report of the special agent Is abody blow to tho boomers or snip ihni.lv who are trying to torce con to nttss a law which would put 14.600, 000 annually Into the pockets of a few ship owners on the Atluntle Ma at Tne original Intention was to bleed tho country to the extent of 19,000,000 .,.,,n, then reducing the amount no.h,iir which was thought to be -nnop.Hlnn. It was freely predicted that the bill would go through nt the nvt pnmrress with a rusn. The boomers' main argument that If there wore more ships there would ha more trade was simply annihilated h ho facts of Mr. Hutchinson's re- nnrt. and It covers the Important field of South American trade. A competent waiter Is not a fool by a long shot, and uo man Is so liberal at any other moment of his life as when be Is feeding well. A first class serving man at table can wheedle a quarter or half dollar out of eve,n a stingy blather skite by some delicate attention, oy showing Just the least bit of Interest In his especial welfare. A German lieu tenant In hard lines Is waiting In s swell hotel here. Ills tips amount to $10 a day. lie Is Incognito for the pres ent. University graduates could do quite as well. The principal trouble Is that waiting Is regarded as too servile, too menial, smacking too much of slav ery. Alfred Buuu, the celebrated English Impresario and operatic librettist of the last century, was not always In an amiable frame of mind, and one day be was seen at a rehearsal holding a wretched "super" by the collar and scolding him savagely. The poo' few low's fright and distress, says F. J Crowest In his biographical anecdotes of famous musicians, attracted the at tention of Mallbrun, the famous prima donna. The lady crossed over to the manager and said: "Do you know, I shall call you 'Good Friday.' " "Whyr he asked. "Because," replied Mallbran, "you are such a hot cross bun." Bed lores. Bed sores are sores that form on those parts of the body that are under most in the position taken up by the bed occupant. As a rule they never form unless the sufferer Is confined to one position. When set up they are most distressing. Whisky or brandy used as a lotion to the healthy skin once dally will prevent them. When there are commencing sores they should be treated with white of egg mixed with powdered alum. The two should be well rubbed up together. If one has not a mortar and pestle It Is a good plan to mix the things In a basin with a bone knife handle. - DITB OR. M. S. KKRIN. lir.Nlu eeon. Office, room ID juaa duiiu- ng. -pnone, dihck i. B.
