The East Oregonian regrets to men

business men, who have legitimate
lines of business In the city have made
a persistent, personal boycott of this

The statement of D. E. Farrow,
who Is now In this city from Iowa, to
the effect that he wa familiar with
actual conditions and business details
ia this city through reading the Week
ly East Oregonian for the past five
years. Is but one Instance of the secret
yet Irresistible influence of the news
paper.
This man had never visited Pendle
ton before thin trip, and yet he knew
what school tax wa voted here, what
the school buildings cost, what the
sewer system coat and how many mile
of newer pipe It contained, how many
new residence had been built In the
past year, how many of the large
stores had enlarged their floor space
and stocks, and. In fact, wa familiar
with every detail of the business ac
tivity of the city, through the copies
of this paper he ha read.
The newspaper boost every Indi
vidual business In a town time and
time again every month. It make
friend and patrons for every man
whom It mention kindly, or vice versa.
People form friendship through
newspaper tor!e and every legitimate
business In a city owes much of Its
success to the persistent free adver
Using of the papers.
Suppose E. H. Harrlman should get
on an O. R. & N. train at Baker City,
Incognito, and should stand up in the
aisles and vestibule of the car half
of the way across the Blue mountains,
because the train was so crowded. Do
you think he would hesitate to order
another passenger train placed In
service to handle the westward rush
of travel?
Pendleton, Walla Walla, La Grande,
Boise City, and other place of Im
portance along the line of the O. R.

other train temporarily, to accommo

such a train.

Such a special train run from Boise
City, or even from Salt Lake, would
be clean and fresh for local travel,
could be kept on time and would stim

putting off the trip to the fair because
of the Inconvenience of traveling In
the crowded trains. Let u have a lo
cal train for two month.
Mayor Belcher of .Paterson. N. J.,

danger but stuck to his post, threw
his lever and set his emergency
brakes. The passenger coaches thus
checked were saved. Mootiey went
down with his engine, a martyr to
duty.
If Mooney had traveled by the Bel
