Sat T DAILY EAST OREGON IAN, PENDLETON, OREGON, VtUUMV, KVGV&TJif 190S. MIGHT PAGES. PAGE SEVEN. I - ! AMONG THE OF THE INLAND EMPIRE Cur Tlilom lit La Grundo. Doputy Sheriff Tom Johnxon ur rested anothur cur thief lant evening. Mr. Johnson caught the fellow red hanilod and almoHt got another, but to tho goographlcnl locution of the battle and the IntenBo darkness of the nlKht wore the cause of the es cape of the second party. Chief of Police Iluybiuh discovered that a box car had been entered and robbed, and also discovered the lo cation of tho stolen goods, but as he was obllgod to attend tho meeting of the city council lant evening he turned the caso ovor to Deputy Tom John son. Mr. Johnson secreted himself near the goods and waited for the robbers to appear and get their swag. Ho had mado no mistake and about 10 o'clock laHt evening two men ap peared and began carrying off their booty. Before they had proceeded far he had one of them and the other so far as he knows Is still going. La Grande Observer. i Water Syxtimi In tlx) Interior. The bids culling for the construc tion of a water system and reservoir were opened by the city council. In Canyon City last Saturday evening, and all bids ordered rejected except those of A. D. Shelton, representing the National Wood Pipe company, of Tacoma, Wash., and Messrs. Gould & Mears, of Hood Elver. These gentle men were requested to submit bids on a smaller umount of material and a somewhat modified system. The contract was finally awarded to the National Wood Pipe company, their bid being (5600, several hundred dol lars under the bid of Messrs. Gould & Mears. Mr. Bhelton also secured the contract at Prairie City, for 16827.56. John Duy News. Killed Near Diirkce. On Tuesday evening Frnnk Harri son, a middle-aged Pleasant Valley farmer, attempted to flag the east bound passenger train a short distance from Durkee. The man's peculiar demonstrations were not noticed by any one on the train or at least the purpnso was not appreciated as trains do not stop for such peculiar signals. The consequences were that he was struck by the train and almost In stantly killed. The train was backed up and the mangled remains carried to Huntington. Coroner Snow was notified and wont there early yesterday morning where he Impaneled a Jury to hold and Inquest As the witnesses nec essary were members of the train orew, after viewing tho remains, an TIIK SWELLING TOAD. Curious Points About Tills Oddity Among Animals. The wonder of the genus butraclilR and the greatest natural history oddity to be found along the Atlantic const f the United States Is the swelling toad, a semlaciuatlo creature known to iiuralluts as liufoiuaclialutus. It Is occasionally met with from New York oity to Jacksonville, Flu., hut Is most common along the coasts of Virginia. Maryland and North Carolina. When la Its natural state the "swell toad" Is about the siztf of 'n lnrge bullfrog, but looks more liku u ilsh than It does like either a frog or u toail. It is about six Inchon In lenglh and has the curious faculty of being able to swell to the size of u football. In which state Its legs, tall and head lire scarcely ' risible. Irritation appears to be the chief factor In causing these curious crea tures to Inhale air until they swell al most to bursting. The bellies of both Hie-males mui reiuuies nre uenriy pure white and are covered with spines which give that portion of their anato my the appearance of a well rip ened Jlnison bur. Persons who under stand the, "swell toad" and know what an Irritably little rascal it is catch It and rub the spines on Its belly, when It swells up until It Is utterly helpless. Another curious point about the crea ture Is that at long as It Is kept on Its back it Is unable to expel the air so is to reduce the swelling. TIIK MANLY APOLOGY. Story of One Cane. Where it Wits Due and Wuh Not Given. It is a brave man who can apologize. It is one of the highest attributes of n gentleman. I never yet knew anybody . who lost money by nn apology. I know many men who made some. I know a man lu (he city of London who spoke harshly to his coiilWIentiiil clerk. He accused him of having mislaid or Inst a certain long and Important letter. The clerk said very politely be luul never seen such a document. The merchant said, "Don't lie a fool ill talking such nonsense," The clerk gave In his res lunation. It was the duty of this clerk to call at his employer's house In the evening after dinner to take to the of lice next morning' such letters as would require attention. There he found the missing letter. The merchant hud plac ed It, with a few others, lu his over coat pocket to read carefully at home In the evening, lie said: "I did not know I had done Hint. You must with draw your resignation. I will Increase your salary." Hut never a word of manly apology. Tho Incident left Its ting behind. Tho confidence and trust the clerk had lu his employer were lost. So, a year lator, when this conUdentiul dork came Into a big sum of money he refused the partnership that wi offer ed him; he Joined an opposition Ann, and the profits of this merchant have fallen In four years from 15,000 year to 3,000. II lost that, and he hat gnlned premature old age and much mental anxiety. This Is a true story. . The dwelling of Con Quintan, near Tahoe, Wash., was burned by children playing with fire. An Infant child was burned to death. EXCHANGES adjournment was rnu.de until today when they could be present. Trump Foil From Train. The lnxanslblo body of a man was discovered yesterday by a section gang coming from Huntington, near North Powder. Tho man was bruised all over tho body and was Injured In ternally. He had evidently, fallen from some passenger train. The body was taken back to Huntington and the man's wounds cared' for, though small hope was entertained for his recovery. As ho was plainly a tramp, Judge Travllllon was notified and he at onco gave Instructions with regard to his care. Letters on tho Injured man's person showed that his home was In Iowa. Baker City Herald. Five Hundred Cattle. Sold. About 200 head of cattle wero fer ried across the river at this point yes terday en route to pasturage at North Yakima, where they will bo fed on al falfa hay and prepared for market. They were purchased on the Des chutes by Messrs. F. P. Taylor and J. T. Rorlck, and constitute a portion of a largo band of cattle these gen tlemen have secured In that locality. Today 2G0 more head of this band of cattle will arrive In tho city and be taken Immediately to the pasture In North Yakima. The Dalles Chroni cle. Suffered, a Sunstroke. The first oase'of sunstroke record ed during the hot spell occurred near here, the victim being Arthur Has kell. He was returning from McKay creek and was on his way home to Stanley creek, when he was overcome with the heat near Pilot Rock. Dr. Parker administered restoratives and after a short time he was taken home by his wife. Pilot Rock Record. Five I'lrniH Burned Out At 3 o'clock this morning a fire at Clurkston destroyed the Prest & Clark meat market, Leroy Jennings' har ness store. J. H. Reed's saloon, O. F. Carroll's confectionery store, and the office buildings together with a con siderable quantity of lumber of the D. B. Parks lumber yards. The total loss Is estimated at from $15,000 to $20,000. with very light in surance. Lewiston Tribune. Railroad Agent at Irrlgon.
