Mm Gitoi'P or TIN .MIXES soi.n ixit $.mo,iit.i. Sun Francisco People Sell iiluahlr Properly In York District to Knir lish Capitalists llelieved Thnt the Mines Will He Grout Producers I'nlled States Fscs S2 1.0(10.00(1 Worth of Tin Each Year. Much interest has been aroused in mining circles throughout tilts coun try ami England b the tu-jxt that val uable tin mines have be discover ed In Alaska; not only discovered, but successfully put upon the market by their American owners and bought by an English company for the sum of $5,000,000. In token of the consummation of this sale, Charles A. Mau, a San Francisco attorney, has Just executed before the British consul In San Fran cisco the necessary bond for the amount named. The mines so dispos ed of were the Joint property of Mr. Mau, Julius W. Raphael, J. P. Flood, of Alaska, nnd several others. The locntlon of the valuable de posits, made doubly aluable in the threatened exhaustion of the tin mines in Cornwall, is described as scattered on the streams flowing Into Lopp -Lagoon, a part of Bering strait, in the York region of Alaska. Those of the claims that are particularly rich In both tin and gold deposits are located in groups of eight, or a total of 2040 acres altogether, along the Oakland, Tin, Dlomede. Midas, Red Fox, Washington, Nebraska and Ma ma creeks. Each group, 13 In all. Is known by a separate name, ns fol lows: Arlington, Myrtle, Wonder, Bu chanan, Lincoln, Garfield. Bryan. Rhode Island, Nebraska, Nob Hill. Cleveland, Washington nnd Humboldt. For many years nobody regarded tlie York region of Alaska as a likely field for mining operations. Its only practical use. until some time after the discovery of gold at Nome, was that made of It as a government reserva tion for reindeer. This was at Cape Prince of Wales, where there was also a mission. The rush ha Nome natur ally resulted In an overflow Into the York region, but no Immediate success rewarded these efforts and It was not until 1903 that this region began to lecelve the systematic attention it merited. That tin wns in the York region, however, wns known as long ago ns 1900, when prospectors In search of the more precious metal found the riffles In their sluice boxes filled up with a heavy black gravel and be came so disgusted with Its prevalence that they abandoned their claims. Other prospectors of greater exper ience soon followed their too easily discouraged brethren, and these later comers pounced upon the tin deposits with enthusiastic appreciation of their worth. Last year Raphael and Mau shipped about a hundred hags of the tin ore from their Alaska claims to Hamburg, Germany, and expert to hear favora bly from the assaying test which will soon be made In the smelters of that city. A smelter In San Francisco is one of the prophecies made In con nection with the future development of these deposits, and It is believed that once the new mines nre being adequately worked the United States will become an exporter, instead of an importer of tin. This will be no inconsiderable change, when it Is re membered that now we use 43 per cent of the world's total output, or about $24,000,000 worth annually. Rent Her Double. "I knew no one for four weeks, when I was sick with typhoid and kid ney trouble," writes Mrs. Annie Hun ter of Pittsburg, Pa., "nnd when 1 got better, although I had one of the best doctors I could get, I was bent double, and had to rest my hands on my knees when I walked.
