THE TRIBUNES STANDARD.
The Morning Tribune sueeringly re
fers to "woman's rights" as if such a
thing were a disgrace.
Did anybody ever hear the Tribune
object to the thugs, gamblers, tin
horns, "maenues," or other of Its sup
porters and friends, having a right to
vote and assist in making laws under
which It must live?
All these classes of people are law
breakers, yet no one ever heard the
Tribune or any of Its ilk. objecting to
these parasites taking part in govern
ment.
But if mention Is made of the
mothers, wives and daughters of the
land taking part in the making of
laws, it sneerlnglv and insultingly re
fers to such as a disgraceful thing.
This is the standard of the Tribune
according to Its own statements and
actions. The people may Judge it to
Bult themselves.
The East Oregonian believes that
woman is just as intelligent as man.
Just as capable of thinking, just as
capable of acting. Just as capable of
Baying what laws shall be made and
enforced, and under God's plan, Is as
much entitled to say what her legal
surroundings shall be as man, the
self-asserted tyVant and dictator.
If the Tribune has any female an
cestors of which it is ashamed, it Is
excusable, of course, for Its belief as
to woman's rights In the government
but for a sane man, of good morals,
the possessor of an intelligent wife,
the associate of Intelligent women, an
educated man, wlthall, living at the
dawn of the twentieth century, in the
possession of all his faculties and
senses, to object to women taking part
in civilized government, Is one of the
wonders of the world.
This belief of the Tribune's is ;e
sponsible for many other of its queer
notions on government and society.
Of course, it is not supposed to see
clearly from this twentieth century
point of view, with its mental vision
so obscured and its feet so tightly
bound to the shattered doctrines and
beliefs of the dark ages.
Burning witches at the stake would
have been the Tribune's chief pas
time, had it lived a century ago. As
it is not allowed to practice this pet
pastime in this enlightened age, It re
sorts to that other equally as blind
and narrow fanaticism, of declarln
that woman Is man's slave and prop
erty, Inferior In Intellect and stability
and not capable of making laws tin
der which her sons must live.
IS THE GOVERNMENT HONEST?
If the government really desires to
preserve the forests for future, as Is
the avowed object of the present ays-
tern of forest reserves, it should re
move the duty from lumber. In order
to admit Canadian lumber and relieve
the strain on American forests to thl
extent
This Infamous tariff Is robbing the
builders of homes while It stultifies
the forest reserve Idea, by forcing the
government to yield to the Importunl
tie of the great timber syndicates In
granting them the right to Invade the
very forests that should be preserved.
The demand for timber was never
more sharp than now, when so many
new settlements are springing up all
over the West. The supply Is con
stantly being reduced, while the gov
ernment is Instituting a makeshift
forest policy which only tightens the
bonds on the consumer of lumber by
reducing the visible supply to this ex
tent and Increasing the cost of pro
duction. Canadian forests are yet practical
ly untouched. The tariff on lumber
maintained by the United States has
forbidden the Introduction of Cana
dian lumber into this country, while
the demand in Canada has been
merely nominal.
Tills vast empire of timber Just
cross the border Is awaiting a mar
ket while the builders of homes Just
this side the border are being robbed
by the American tariff which forbids
them to cross the line and secure
cap lumber.
If the government is honest, if
Western senators have the Interests of i
the country at heart, if they are n)t
tied hand and foot by the sawmill
corporations, they would undertake to
remove the tariff on this necessity.
anadtan millers would gladly snd
their product here, but they cannot do
it at present. American consumers
ould gladly welcome the Canadian
roduct. but the tariff stands between
them and the Canadian forest.
The lumber Industry in this country
is no longer an Infant industry. It
no longer needs this protection.
Wages in the lumber mills of Ire
Sound are lower than thoy were 13
ears ago, and yet the price of lum
ber has doubled in that time.
The only true forest reserve policy
is to remove the tariff and allow Can
adian lumber to come and relieve th
pressure on our own forests.
EARMARKS OF THE CALLING.
The city council of Athena has or
dered the manager of an Athena sa
loon to resign from the position or the
license of the saloon would be revoked
because the joint had Issued a lot of
obscene literature and was circulat-
ng It among the boys and young men
n that community.
This Is an index to this disgusting
calling. Its sole object and purpose
in business circles Is to prostitute, to
lower, to degrade everything and
everybody with which lt'comes In con
tact. It Is not enough to make
drunken sots and loafers out of re
spectable boys; It Is not enough to
violate all the known laws; It Is not
enough to maintain boxes, dives and
dead-falls for young people, but It
must print degrading stuff to be car
ried into the very homes to contamin
ate and lower the standard of man
hood taught and Inculcated by par
ents.
Did any one ever hear of a hard
ware merchant, a dry goods dealer, a
grocer, a blacksmith, a barber, hotel
keeper or other respectable calling
being called down by a city council
for distributing obscene advertising
matter? But this is part of the busi
nes of the dive keeper. It is one of
his objects in life. If such things do
not inflict prohibition on Umatilla
county, nothing will.
LAW SHOULD STAND.
For the benefit of Oregon stock
men and farmers the East Oregonian
hopes the law taxing outside sheep
for grazing in Oregon, proves to be
valid and constitutional.
This thing of being eaten out of
house and home every year by outside
stock Is becoming tiresome. Oregon
stockmen pay taxes to support the
state government and California and
Washington sheep . have heretofor-3
occupied many of the choice water
ing places and ranges during the en
tire summer season, leaving the state
only for a few months during winter.
The law Is just and is needed for
home protection. Where sheep range
in Oregon for nine months In the year,
they should be taxed to help pay ex
penses. The same Is true of migra
tory bands In counties. It Is only Just
that sheep grazing out of their home
county should pay a proportionate
tax in each county. This thing of liv
ing in Oregon during the summer and
fall and paying taxes in Washington
and California is not Just, and the
East Oregonian hopes that the case
now being brought to Issue sustains
the law.
Take it Easy.
'Bout'the time you get to thlnkln' that
you're gettln' on a bit.
An' you Jingle of your money as you
stroll and strut about,
Better keep your peepers open, for
your life ain't over yet
An there's always lota of danger
when the chest is swellln out.
'Bout the time you git to Iookln al
your neighbors with su'priso,
An a-feelln' sorry fer 'em cuz
you've left in the press,
Then's the time fate's lokln' fer you
with a club of mighty size,
An' you'll feel the rungs a-breakln'
in the ladder of success.

events In the history of
medicine is the multitude of
endorsements which Peruna Is
receiving as a catarrh cure
from men of national
Importance.
The most distinguished men
of the United States have no
hesitation in lending their Influence to
assist in letting the pnblio know of the
merits of Peruna.
Nearly one-half the people are In some
way affected by catarrh. Therefore it
is almost a national curse, and It Is of
national import that the people should
know of Peruna.
Catarrh is an American disease.
Peruna is an American remedy.
Catarrh Is a resnlt of changeable
climate. Peruna is a result of long and
careful experimentation.
Catarrh enters the system through the
nerve centers and affects the mucous
membranes. Peruna enables the nerve
centers to repel and expel the catarrh
from the system.
Catarrh Is a systemic disease and
curable only by systemic, treatment.
The remedy that cures catarrh must
aim directly at the depressed nerve
centers. This is what Peruna does.
