tion of almost a century of conflict be
tween the ruler and the parliament.
Norway .has been n subject provlno
.or In some manner uttached to either
Sweden or Denmark and betd ruled
from a foreign capital since 1319,
when Magnus Eriksson was proclaim
ed klnft of Norway und Sweden. Ever
.since that da.'.e a contiruous war has
been wacd for freedom. The blood
of .the Norwegians has flowed like
water during that time, and every oc
casion that promised to lend to liber
ty has been eagerly seized upon by the
descendants of the Northmen.
From 1537 to 1814 Norway was a
provluce of Denroerk, and it was only
as an aftermath of the Napoleonic
wars that It was once again Joined
to Sweden with a constitution of Us
own, and the promise of being gov
erned reparole from Sweden, The
storthing or parliament wits one of
the provisions wrested from the Euro
pean powers, which were making the
mnp of Europe after the victory over
JMapolleon.
The entire feeling of the Norwe
gians during the past century has been
toward a republic and this may event
ually, even speedily, be realized, from
the present temper of the people.
The Norwegians, Danes and Swedes
are of the Aryan tribes and emigrated
from their Asiatic home together. They
differ but little at this late date In
their language and customs, but of late
years the Norwegians have been ac
centing their difference In seeking to
revive the Idioms of the ancient lan
guage and In cultivating the national
literature and spirit. -
The ancient Norwegians were fol
lowers of Odin and their deeds In their
viking ships, putting out of the little
bays in the north, filled the entire
Christian world with dread. Up till
the middle of the eighth century, the
Norsemen played but little part in the
world's history, and but little Is known
of them before that time. In that
century they broke over the fae of
Europe like a destructive tempest-and
whenever the fast sailing ships of the
Norsemen were sighted in the river
mouths, the people fled In terror and
the priests prayed In vain.

Into effect and, gathering a large
army from his provinces, marched

The final battle of supremacy over

ed to reckon with him. A pueblo
way up in the mountains refused to
come lno the camp and be vaccinat
ed, un'iil they received orders from
their pastor. El Senor Reverado
Frederico, as he Is called.
"So upon learning this from the of
ficers, Mr. Jansen tramped away up
over the mountains, had his people
brought into Camp Walker, and told
they they should be vaccinated and
obey all the laws. He then arranged
for a separate camp for the "Protes
tants" and they are to have a pueblo
of their own until the reconcentrado
policy Is no longer necessary. This
is in the heart of the Pulajane coun
try, where the ladrones are out In
isvge companies and yet escaping
capture.
"Nevertheless, the constabulary of
ficers told Mr. Jansen that he was
perfectly safe In the mountains, ns
the Pulajanes seemed all to be his
friends. At any rate, they seem to
have it understood among them that
he is not to be harmed, and as for
the real Protestants In the far-off
pueblos, they were perfectly overjoy
ed to find that their pastor had come
out to stand between them and the
Pulajanes on the one hand, and the
undue harshness of the constabulary
on the other."
Whale Meat.
Newfoundland has recently develop
ed a new industry, which Is slated to
be a successful one namely, that of
placing on the market whale flesh in
place of beef. Whale meat tastes
more like venison than beef, and is
quite a temptins article of diet. A
firm intends shortly to try a shipment
to the English market, where it Is ex
pected they will be able to retail
while meat at from one and one-halt
pence to three pence per pound. The
meat has already been shipped In
large quantities to the West Indies
where It is much appreciated by the
natives.
