An enterprise has Just been com pleted In this city of which the cttl sens can well be proud of. Any one Interested whatever In the workings of the telephone system would not re gret paying a visit to the office of the Pacific States Telephone & Tele graph company, now occupying the ground floor of the Matlock building on Court street, and be shown through the same, which Manager Carr invites the public to do. An entire new system, called the common battery, central battery, lamp light system, has recently been Installed they do not use a thing in the present system that was used In the old exchange. As you enter the office you are In by Miss Adele Moussu. This desk is so equipped that the chief operator can obtain a connection with any sec tion of the board at any time and thus be enabled to have Instant and continuous check of all the operators. Next, a large room, just back of the operating room, .called the terminal room. Here you will find most of the machinery of the office. On one side you will see where 1400 Insulated wires enter from the under ground and distribute on a large frame called the main f.-ame. From this desk "all of the testing is done. It Is so equipped that, the wire chief can locate and tell the nature of any trouble that Made l Miles In 21 Minutes With 55 Car Freight Train on Blue Moun tain Unit Was Made til a Banter With Conductor "Dad" Nash, Now Deceased So Far as la Known the Record is Still Unbroken. "Bllnky" Morgan, the well known engineer who has Just been appointed locomotive engineer for the state por tage road, holds the record for the fastest run with a freight train on the La Grande-Umatilla division of the O. R. & N. It was In 1900, some time In the spring, when the track was In good condition. Just after being ballasted well, and when Morgan had the "spring fever" and felt like running. On leaving Huron stution, 40 miles east of Pendleton. Morgan asked Conductor "Dad" Nash, now deceased, how quick he wanted to go to Bing ham Springs, 19 miles below, on Mea cham creek. , "Just as quick as you can." was "Dad's" laconic reply, and "Bllnky" ' ' s;';i -v - -, "A,, Miss Julia Roniaine, leading lady In "Reaping the Harvest," at the Frazer on Sunday night, -May 28. the public room, which is neatly equipped for the public toll line serv ice, off from the public room Man ager Carr has his office, which is also furnished and equipped for his con venience. Next the operating room. Here you Bee the switchboard reaching al most the entire length of the large ; room. It has positions for six operat- I ors and during the busiest part of the 1 day all positions are filled. I Each operator has a certain num ber of Instruments to look after, these are portioned to her side of the board. On the horizontal part of the board are several switches and signals by which she controls the instruments allotted to her. In front of her are ' the telephone numbers with a small I electric lamp for a signal. Kvery time j a subscriber removes the receiver I from the hook of his telephone It lights the small electric light Just; over the telephone number, and as j ehe answers the lamp goes out. By a signal the operator Is ena- i bld to tell If the connection has been made. If the line Is in use, if the i parties are waiting, If the conversa-' tion has been finished, and If one or ! the other Is waiting for another num-1 ber. The boar:! Is so arranged that the i operator, i.t a Rlance, can make an Instant connection with any line in the exchange or can connect with the long distance portion of the switch board. The long distance portion of the wltchboard is so equipped that when a call is given, the exact time is stamped on the ticket. When the party begins to talk the ticket la tamped again, and when they hangj up their receiver. It la stamped again, thus enabling the operator to tell the exact time the parties talked; show ing the number of minutes or the fractional part of a minute. In the operating room you will find the chief operator'! desk, managed occuis either In the exchange or on I the toll lines. 1 Just off from the terminal room I there Is a large room used for a store: room for material and a shop, room i for the linemen. It Is certainly up-to-date In equip ment and arrangement, and Pendle ton can well feel "proud of her tele phone system, which goes to makej an up-to-date city. It Is the only ; common battery system in the Inland I Empire except the one that is now be Ing installed at La Grande. PROCEEDINGS AHE ISSUED. Iteeordsi of Eighth Annual IJvcfetock Convention Now Being Distributed. Secretary James H. Gwlnn, of the National Livestock association, Is now sending out the proceedings of the eighth annual convention of the asso ciation held last January In Denver. The book contains 4 00 pages and numerous photographs of prominent livestock men all over the country, and is an interesting and valuable collection of livestock Information and statistics. In addition to the proceedings of the convention Is also the proceedings of the meeting of the 'Public Land commission, consisting' of Newell, Klchards and Plnchot. with the stockmen, at the same time and place, this discussion being one of the most important portions of the volume. The volume may be procured by addressing Mr. Gwlnn at Denver. Johnnie Kuhn Acquitted. The jury In the case of the state against Johnnie Kuhn, charged with larceny of certain horses, waa out but 12 minutes, when It returned with a verdict of not guilty. It Is aid that they would not have been out so long, but for the fact that the members wanted to take a smoke. Grant County News, looked at his watch as he pulled swiftly out of the yards. There was no operator at North Fork and there was nothing to stop for until Bingham Springs was reach ed. The freight engine was In excellent condition and everything was favor able for a fast run. Bert Huffman, now editor of the East Oregonlan, was fireman, and there were two brake men on the train, who had not heard of "Bllnky" Morgan's record for swift running. There were 65 freight cars in the train and there were no slow orders nor other obstacles in the way and so by the time Morgan reached Ihi first mile post out of Huron he was going about 45 miles an hour. Faster and faster the wheels turned, the cars rocking and reeling around the curves like drunken men. leaving a level streak of dust behind In the canyon. The caboose whipped around the sharp curves like It was a whip popper and the head brakeman who had seat ed himself on top of the train about 10 .cars from the engine, being una ble to walk, crawled over the tops of the cars to the engine, to see If she was running away. North Fork, 10 miles away, was passed 12 minutes after leaving Hu ron, and now the long sweeping curves and level stretches of track down Meacham creek, between Bingham and North Fork Invited the engineer to "let her out," and he did. Trees flitted past like skyrockets, section crews stood aghast as the train flashed around the curves, the whistle screaming warning every mile and the speed of the train was so great that the dust It stirred up had not time to raise until after the train had whizzed around a curve half a mile away. Exactly 21 minutes after leaving Huron, he stopped at Bingham, making the 19 miles in 21 minutes, including starting and stopping, with 65 cars on a mountain grade with dozens of eight and 10 degree curves. So far as Is known the record stands unbroken on the mountain di vision of the O. R. & N. Great Britain Loses Land. Great Britain lost 148,906 acres be tween 1867 and 1880 by the encroach ment of the sea, and 29,155 acres be tween 1880 and 1890. A survey In the reign of Edward I gave the duchy of Cornwall 1,600,000 acres, but the ordnance survey Borne .years ago showed that this had been reduced to 829,500 acres. Villages have disap peared In the ocean1, as In the case of Dunwich, of which nothing remains but a ruined church on the edge of a cliff.
