versation they all reported that not In
many years had there been as much
molslure in the ground us there Is
this present seuson. The announce-!
ment came as a startling revelation
to those who had not studied the sit
uation. everybody knows that the snow
fall In this territory, even In the high
hills, has been less than half the av
erage, and the extremely mild winter
has carried the snow off gradually
ntil even now little Is left on the
highest peaks. The practical man,
however, says that the reason for the
extra moisture In the ground notwith
standing the light snowfall Is the long
open winter. Little frost entered the
ground and what moisture there was,
was retained. Tills means that In
spite of seemingly disadvantageous
conditions, Eastern Oregon can ex
pect perhaps better than the average
crops. This opinion Is augmented by

Yesterday morning there appeared
in the Democrat an Item stating that
In the prosecution of the survey work
on the Eagle Valley railroad teams
had to be abandoned and pack horses
used over the trail on account of the
narrow roads. The headline to the
article read, "Pack Horses Needed
for the Vinson Railroad." All diiy
long Mr Vinson's office was thronged
with people anxious to sell him horses
and the bookkeeper could do nothing
the entire time but answer horse
' questions and explain It was not nec
essary to examine the animals brought
In as the road was not buying horses,
only using Its own on the trail. Evi
dently the horsemen had not stopped
to read the article itself. This only
shows what advertising will do.

What might have been a very seri
ous accident occurred on the Sump
ter Valley railway yesterday after
noon nt a point about eight miles
from Buker City near the Gorge,
which delayed the evening passen
ger train so that it did not arrive In
the city until after 7 o'clock.
It seems that two large boulders I
rolled down the mountain side, from
nearly a mile distant, and cub the
truck in pieces, even destroying the
rails and smashing the ties into kind
ling wood. The boulders were as
large as a good-sized house and fell
on the track Just ahead of the logging
train, which was stopped in time to
avoid being sm:ished.

Circuit court yesterday was en
gaged all day In the continuation of
the trial of the case of-R. C. Thom
ason and W. T. Thomason against the
O. R. & N. company for the value of
a burned grain field. The case has
been on trial four days; Thursday
the Jury went to the premises and
viewed the situation, and up to &
o'clock yesterday evening 16 wit
nesses had been Introduced for the
plaintiffs and 15 witnesses for the de
fendant. A working model of a por
tion of a locomotive, charts, plats and
maps were also put In evidence. The
case Is one of the most closely con
tested suits ever to come before the

The committee which has charge of
the construction of the dam at the
Lake will start work next week-.

expert engineer, is expected to arrive
