Over $200,000 Lost in Inland Em
pire La-t Year Through Posts in
IVuits Formula for Spraying Ap
ple and Pear Trees.
A. L. Melander of the zoology de
partment of the state college of
Washington, has just published a
bulletin -on "The Wormy Apple."
Last year 1500 carloads of apples,,
valued at $600,000, were carried by
rail from the Inland Empire and this
was less than one-half of the amount
grown. Those not shipped were wor
my and were left to rot or to be con
sumed at home. It Is figured that
the farmer lost $200,000 to the worms
on last year's crop.
The codling moth is the cause of
the wormy apples though not many
fruitgrowers are willing to believe It
The borer which destroys the apple
is the larvae, or worm form of the
moth. Wherever the apple can grow
the codling moth can live also.
The apple is essentially the food of
the codling worm. In some sections
of the state two generations of worms
occur each season. The worm of the
first brood is hatched from a tiny flat
egg laid by the mother on or near the
young apple. When it hatches It
seeks shelter In the calyx of the apple.
Now it proceeds to burrow Into the
apple feeding as it goes, remaining
there for two or three weeks, or till
it is grown, then It emerges and
seeks another hiding place.
When a suitable place is found It
spins a cocoon and in this it pupates,
that Is. it changes to the brownish,
legless worm. After two weeks It is
again transformed to the moth.
Now eggs of the second brood are
laid on the apples and when hatched
the worms burrow through the skins
of the apples. Again this second
brood cocoon and remain over' winter
as larvae.
Spraying, if done at the proper
time, is the effectual remedy for get
ting rid of these pests. The time for
the first spraying is just after the
blossoms have fallen and before the '
calyx cup has closed; but as the
blossoms fall about two weeks be
fore the majority of the worms enter
the apple. It Is necessary to spray a
j second time two weeks after the first
treatment.
These two sprayings usually prove
an effectual campaign agi'.inst the
first brood; however, If a spraying Is
needed for the second brood it should
take place about a week after the
moths appear to allow for the incu
bation period of the egg. Even a
fourth spraying may be necessary
two weeks later. It Is essential to
spray well and at the proper time.
The formula for spraying solution
for apple and pear trees stands:

A Lincoln Story.
Colonel William H. Crook, who in
ls63 was apolnted a special body
guard to President Lincoln, and who
Is now the disbursing officer at the
White House, says: "Mr. Lincoln
used to say many funny things. He
kept me laughing at his stories. I
remember one evening, just before the
close, of the civil war, that he had
some visitors at the -White House,
among them some senators and mem
bets of congress. One of the guests
asked the president what he would do
with Jefferson Davis If he were cap
tured. Crossing his legs and looking
at his friends with the peculiar twin
kle In his eyes, he said: 'Gentlemen,
that reminds me of an Incident of my
home In Illinois. One morning, when
I was on my way to the office. I saw
a small boy standing on a streef cor
ner crying as if his heart would
break. I asked him what was the
cause of his sorrow. He said: "Mis
ter, don't you see that coon?" point
ing to a poor little beast that he had
tied to a string. "Well, that animal
has given me a heap of trouble all the
way along, and now he has nearly
gnawed the string In two. I wish to
goodness he would gnaw It in two
and get away, so I could go home
and tell my folks he had escaped
from me." Gentlemen, this homely
story carries Its own lesson and an
swers your question. Everybody
knew that Mr. Lincoln had no feeling
of bitterness against the people of
the South, and that he always advis
ed tenderness and leniency In deal
ing with those who surrendered to the
Union cause."

A GIRL'S NATURE.
Little Blame That, It Im Said, Re-rial
Phases of Character,
Much of a girl's nature Is betrayed
by the little act of brushing a speck
off a' man's coat. If she picks off the
thread or Imaginary bit of lint very
carefully between the thumb and fore
fluger it Is an Indisputable sign that
she Is a womnu of a very practical and
executive character.
On the other hand, if a girl should
brush the coat lapel of her Ounce very
softly and tenderly with the second
and third finger of her hand In her en
deavor to remove an invisible speck It
is a sure sign that she Is more sentl;
mental than practical. The man who
marries her will live in a continual at
mosphere of romance and bad house
keeping. There is still another type of girl
who will brush the speck off a man's
coat with a broad sweep of the hand
In which all the Angers and thumb piny
a part. She Is In all probability an
athletic girl who excels at tenuis, golf
and the links and who will prove a
high spirited, strong mauled woman
after murrlagp.
Then, again, the girl who puts a
flower in a man's cout with her hand
held jauntily upturned from the wrist
and the flower held in the tips of her
lingers is sure to be something of a
coquette, while the maid who gives
you only the tips of her fingers when
she greets you in the drawing room or
public street Is probably an ambitious
girl. Chicago Journal. '
