New York City
New Tork. Feb. ii. An Institution
or hotel where a respectable orkliig
w,.man who finds herselT out of work
may find a refuge or shelter is about
to be erected In this city. It is a su j
reflection upon a dry of the known
benevolence and charity of New Tork
that such a place has not existed
heretofore. The movement looking
to the erection of such a hotel s
begun some time afro and has steadily
grown, until now the principal mer
chants and business men of New
Tork. together with philanthropists
and other public-spirited cltisens. are
ready to co-operate in the work of
ameliorating the condition of thoxe
members of the worlcinir-g-.rl cU
who have no home to go to and raut
' resort to the small hall bedroom of a
boarding house, with the attendant
temptations and loneliness. The plans
contemplate the construction of a
large hotel on the lines of the Martha
Washington, but of less pretention
and cost, where every patron will In
dulge that Independence which besets
self-respect and self-reliance.
lioosu-d Rice-Cake Business.
A down-town server of quick lunch
hi authority for the statement that the
Kuswo-Japanese war has boosted the
rice-cake business.
"We sell more rice than we ever
did." he says, "and I account for it in
"the fact that people have been read
ing about the Japs' prowess In battle
and the fact that rice forms an im
portant part of their diet. The infer
ence, you see. is that rice must be a
good thing to eat. That's the way
the Idea seems to work out. at all
events. Americans, with all their
originality, are the most imitative
People on earth, and nothing
catches them so quickly as a health
tad. In restaurants you can observe
this every day. It used to be fish aril
wheat that were boomed as supplying
brains and brawn, but rice is sup
planting them, or giving them a hard
run for place Just now."
Was An Expensive Borrow.
In most of the fur and cloak house
of the metropolis the girls employ-J

are often invited to dinner and then
ter parties by buyers from out of ;ow:
stores who come to the city to re
plenish their home stocks at this ::m
of the year. The good ta-ste and ex
perience of these women are of valu
able assistance to buyers, and so
cial courtesies are in 'part appreria
tion of the fact.
s. One of these saleswomen, the utiier
evening, accepted an invitation t;
dinner, and to the theater atteraard.

The Cause of Many

There is a disease prevailing in this

the kidney-poisoned
blood will at

the bladder, or the kidneys themselves
break down and waste away cell by cell.
Bladder troubles almost always result
from a derangement of the kidneys and
a cure is obtained quickest by a proper
treatment of tbe kidneys. If you are fuel
ing badly you can make no'mistake by
taking Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root, the
great kidney, liver and bladder remedy.
It corrects inability to bold urine aiid
scalding pain in passing it, and over
comes that unpleasant necessity of being
compelled to go often through the day,
and to get up many times during the
night. The mild and the extraordinary
effect of Swump-Root is soon realized.
It stands the highest for its wonderful
cures of the most distressing cases.
Sw&mp-koot is pleasant to take and is
sold by all drnginsts in fifty-cent and
one-dollar size bottles. You may have a
sample bottle of this wonderful new dis
covery and a book that tells all alwut it,
both sent free by mail. Address, Dr. Kil
