Washing ton Star. At 11 o'clock lust night Dick Pierce. a half breed Indian, was shot through. the body by J. O. Garrett, city mar shal of Adams, while the former waa ' trying to escape from a hack In which he was being brought 'to this place. The attempt to escape and the shoot ing occurred Just to the north of the wagon bridge on the road Into town. When shot Pierce fell, and after be ing placed ln the hack was brought to the sheriff's off'ce, where Deputy Blukely was awaiting them. Dr. Cole was then summoned and the In jured man was taken to the hospital. The bullet, which was from a 3S callbre Smith & Wesson revolver, en tered Pierce's back and lodged In the abdomen. The trouble which culminated la the shooting of the half breed lost night' begun yesterday afternoon in Helix. At that lime Pierce, with two other men, all of whom were partly Intoxicated, raised a disturbance and all but Pierce ' were arrested. Ths latter, who hud drawn his gun on a man during the trouble, rode out of town arid escaped the marshal there. Thinking that he would ride either to this pluce or to Adams, the sher iff's office here und Mnrshal Gurrett ut Adams were 'phoned to be on the lookout for Pierce, ln the evening he was found In an Adams saloon by the inarshul, and when the latter at tempted to urrest him Pierce draw his gun, a long frontier Colt's six -shooter, from his belt and leveled R-' at the marshal. However, he was Im- -mediately grubbed by men from be- -, hind, was disarmed and placed In the jall there. Owing to the poor Jail facilities at Adams It was decided to bring the prisoner here and place him In the county Jail, and the officers here were so notified. In the hack with Pierce were two men beside Marshal Garrett one, the driver, sat on the front seat with the hulf breed, and the other In the rear with the marshal. Pierce was not handcuffed, and Just before the bridge was reached he Jumped from the rig and started to run. He was several times ordered to stop by the marshal, and on re fusal to do so was fired at with the effect mentioned. In Critical Condition. This morning Pierce's Wound was dressed by Dr. Cole, assisted by Dr. Rlngo, An Intestine was found to be perforated, and consequently hla con dition Is considered critical, with strong chances of resulting fatajly.
