The Furniture and Carpet Man
OF
MILTON
"WAS A LARGELY ATTENDED
TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION.
Developed Much Friendly and Unre
strained Discussion, and Was a
Very Profitable Session New and
Strong PollitH Developed In the Dis
cussion About a Teacher's Privilege
of Resigning Willie Under Contract.
Milton, Feb. IS. According to an
nouncement, the teachers of Milton
and vicinity to the number of 23 met
last Saturday afternoon In the Pres
byterian church and held one of the
best local Institutes ever held in Mil
ton. The main feature of the meeting
was the free and easy manner in
wblcb the teachers expressed them
selves. Usually at such meetings
there Is too much stiffness and Qua
ker actions, in which the spirit never
moves more than two or three to
make them interesting, and as a re
sult all go away saying that Institutes
are no good.
Mr. Anderson opened the discus
sion of "Employing a Teacher: From
a Director's Standpoint; From
Teacher's Standpoint," and became so
enthusiastic and Interested in his sub
Ject that he held his audience almost
. sDell-bound for 40 minutes. Ke-
marks were' then made, by E. B. Conk'
Iln, W. 8. Mayberry and Miss Chris
tensen of the Free water schools. -
The thought of signing a contract
and resigning M order to accept an
other school that paid four or five
dollars more a month was thoroughly
discussed. Mr. Mayberry said that a
teacher knew the conditions when he
signed the contract, and If he resigned
to accept another at a higher salary
he sacrificed his1 principle, and wasn't
considered responsible for any prom
ise made.
Several teachers took exception to
this, and said they couldn't see why
a teacher couldn't have the same
privilege as clerks, bankers, book
keepers, etc., to which Mr. Welles
aid: "The teacher has a contract,
and it would be more to her credit to'
fill It, and possibly more money If she
was worthy of her hire."
Mr. Conklln then took up the sub
ject of the "Educational Exhibit at
the Lewis and Clark Fair at Port
land," explaining the features of that
department and answering questions
that were not wholly understood along
that line by those present The Idea
existed around here that only city or
town schools were expected to pre
pare anything for the exhibit; but he
said some of the country schools
should ontdo many of the town
schools. The educational fraternity
may look for something pretty from
the rural end of Umatilla county.
