ACHIEVEMENT.
UnVer am I of opportunity,
And lard of fate beside.
Naught hems my view
Or bars my way. I leap the
bounds of blue;
1 level mountain),: bridge the
lashing aea;
I lift the ores of twinkling
worlds. To me
The whirling systems, twilight
eons through,
Bring tribute vast yet noth
e . ing ever new;
For ere they were I am shall
after be.
Such are my realm and reign:
my throne Is Han.
I make him god, to know
both good and ill;
To taste all fruits, but choose
the higher still.
I, aimless never, patient work
my plan.
Till of my stuff his final self Is
wrought
His will the tool, but I the maa-

the city. There will be issues before
the people at the next city election,
which will invite the Interest of the
taxpayers and the home owning; class.
Pendleton Is becoming one of the
best school towns In the state and
every year marks a large Increase In
the number of wealthy farmers com
ing to town to build homes and en
joy the schools. Preparations must
be made to Invite this class by good
moral surroundings. To this end a
large vote la needed.
How much of their substance do
the people of the Inland Empire
waste each year. In shipping live
hogs and corn and canned foods an
cereal foods and other prepared food
stuffs across the continent? If alt
this stuff was produced here at home,
where the raw material grows, how
much greater would be the profits
saved from Oregon farms and Ore
gon enterprise. Isn't It foolish to
pay for hauling hogs and corn from
Nebraska to Seattle and then to pay
tor hauling back to Pendleton the
pork, the lard and the breakfast ba
con?" Think of the enormous amount
of money that is spent In this need
less procedure, when It might be saved
by (trowing hogs on every Umatilla
county farm and by growing corn as
a summer fallow crop. Oregon farm
ers don't make one-half the legitimate
profits they should make. If they
studied to make their business pro
duce what It Is capable of producing.
Is it any wonder railroads, middle
men and commission houses . reap
enormous profits from the farmers'
shortsightedness? He Is to blame for
It all. He will always be the loser
until he does more headwork on the
farm.
NO SURRENDER OF IRRIGATORS
The temporary defeat of the Irriga
tion laws proposed by the irrigation
commission of Oregon, does not mean
that the real Irrigators of the state
have surrendered.
It simply means 'Sat private Inter
ests have temporarily triumphed over
the general Interest of the state.
The .reclamation department is
-' cordially assured that the senti
ment in favor of a broad, equitable,
well organized code is more strong
today than ever, because It is non
more? clearly shown that private com
panies, selfish interests and water
monopolies are determined to domi
nate the state.
The government is assured that the
people of Oregon, through education
anil ugitatlon will yet pass such a law
as a needed to invite and accomplish
the highest Ideals in reclamation
work.
If the dictum of the legislature
were to be taken as a conclusive ver
"dlct from the people. It would be. a
and day for Oregon. It would mean
that the government Is virtually given
Its "walking papers" together with all
lis organization and reclamation ma
chinery. It would mean that Iduho,
Wyoming. Utah, Montana and Neva
da would enjoy all the splendid fruits
coming from the expenditure of Ore
gon's $4,000,000 donation to the rec
lamation fund.
But such is not the case. . The gov
ernment and the government engin
eers are assured of the kindliest feel
ing and It is said to them In all confi
dence that when the better self of the
people of Oregon speaks. In electing
u legislature two years hence, the
verdict that the message will differ
from that Just given expression to by
the legislature.
Instead of a meager, cadaverous,
skinny, parsimonious, bloodless, sex
Iras creature such as has Just been
born In Oregon In the form of an ir
rigation law, a pulsing, bounding,
life-giving, vitalized code will be born
that will touch the deserts Into blos
som and transform the chaos of
present laws Into a beautiful sym
metry. The Irrigation commission and the
friends of advanced Irrigation legis
lation should organize now, for a
campaign of education.
The government bould be assured
of Oregon's final good intent despite
her present spasm of selfishness. She
la all right, at heart, but she often
hows a disposition to pout. It Is
hoped this pouting spell don't cost
her U. 000,900. .
Collier's weekly for February 18,
contains a striking article on the Or
egon laud frauds and gives photo
graphs of several tumbled-down
"shacks" designated as farm houses
on the claims of "dummy" home
steaders. The pictures of these
houses and the exposures In this ar
ticle will do as much to open the
eyes of the East tc the enormity of
Oregon's crime against the govern
ment aa all of the Indictments com
bined. During the past year 3,000,000
acres of the public domain in the
Northwest has passed Into the hands
of timber monopolies, nearly every
acre of this vast tract being taken
from the people by fraud. This fact
is plainly shown in the article and
these disclosures will not be received
in a very magnanimous spirit by poor
men in the East who need an acre
of land on which to rear their fami
lies. The corruption which has shield
ed and permitted this gigantic Steal
will receive its Just retribution at the
hands of the people. Oregon is to
day the byword of the nation and
half her official crookedness has not
been uncovered.
When George (.'. Brownell goes out
of politics In Oregon, he will leave
a vacancy that It is hoped will never
be filled. A void Is preferable to
some of Rrownell's past activity. It
Is hoped that no ambitious politician
aspires to fill the exact place which
this man has occupied. The state is
now enjoying the reaction from
Rrownell's political activity.
Portland is advertising early for n
candidate for mayor. A classified ml
in Portland papers is declared to he
Infallible in securing results. Men
are mighty scarce In Portland If a
three-line classified, run for a week,
does not produce a properly quulf-
tied candidate for mayor.
A SUGGESTION.
While we're erecting monuments,
It seems to me we should
Not utterly neglect the man
Who first Invented food.
And likewise 'twould not be amiss
To show our feeling deep
For our greatest benefactor he
Who first Invented sleep.
And then we ought to find some way
To show our deep disgust
For the man who first discovered work
And fixed things so we must.
Porter Emerson Brown, in Collier s.
The removal of the city poll tax
disability from the voters In Pendle
ton city elections should stimulate
more Interest In future city election
and bring out a larger vote. At the

A VAGRANTS EPITAPH.
Change was his mistress, chance his
counselor.
Love could not keep him; duty
forged no chain.
The wide seas and the mountains call
ed to him.
And gray dawns saw his campflres
' in the rain! ,
8weet hands might tremble Aye,
but he must go;
Revel might hold him for a little
space.
But turning, past the laughter and the
lamps,
His eyes must ever catch the luring
face.
Dear eyes might question Tea, and
melt again;
Rare lips, a-qulver, silently Implore,
But ever he must turn his furtive
head
And hear the other summons at the
door. , .

The dark firs knew his whistle up

Why tarries he today? And yester

THE INFLUENCE OF MINI).
Many wonder why they do not en
joy good health. Have they ever
asked themselves, do T really enjoy
anything?
Do they enjoy their neighbors' suc
cess and prosperity, or have they all
their lives at heart envied their neigh
bor and secretly wished he might not
succeed in his undertakings?
Have they In the pursuit of their
own success not desired the downfall
of others. Yet they complain of being
In poor health, when from a moral
standpoint their whole mental atti
tude has been wrong.
That we sow what we reap, and as
a man thinketh In his heart, so his
condition as a whole.
This is not the kind of moral ob
liquity that returns evil for good it
is not positive immorality or Iniquity
but It Is a secret, Insidious poison
of coveousness and envy that under
mines the individual's constitution, as
well as his character. Salem Journal.
