Thin in Uw Verdict of Dr. Van Patten of Walla Walla, Concerning Frank Willis Death Was Canned by an Abnormal and Purely Pathological Condition of Ute Heart and Brain- No Poison Found In tlie Stomach. To the question whether Frank Willis committed suicide at Milton, the undertakers, McMartln & Smith, who had charge of the body, and Dr. Van Patten, who analyzed the con tents of the stomach, answer that Frank Willis did not commit suicide, although a bottle of strychnine and a card stating that he was going to take his life were found in his pocket. Thus says the Walla Wulla correspon dent of the Spokesman-Review. At the coroner's Inquest no autopsy was held, and, as the evidence was purely circumstantial, a verdict of sui cide was returned. After the Inquest, when the body of Willis was taken to Walla Walla for burial, an autopsy was performed at the request of the relatives, and Dr. Van Patten says emphatically that there were no traces of strychnine In the stomach, as he made a careful analysis. The dead man's heart was found to be in u terribly diseased condition, the auricles and ventricles being of a bony structure, superin duced by calcium and lime deposits. Instead of being firm and muscular, as Is the ordinary heart, that organ was found to be limp and flabby. The brain was found to be in a bad condi tion, with a growth nearly an Inch in length protruding from the side of the skull. On the side of the head was h scar caused by the blow of an ax when a child which had caused in flammation and the subsequent growth. . No Trace of Convulsion. When the undertaker examined the body not the slightest traces of con vulsions, noticed In every case of strychnine poisoning, were evident on the body. The hnnds were unclench ed, the features composed and every muscle lax. This, condition could not have possibly existed had the man taken the drug found upon his body. The arms and lower limbs and the head would have been more or less bruised with the terrible convulsions that would have racked his frame and the brain would present a con vulsed condition. The theory Is advanced by those familiar In the case that the dead man had purchased the drug with the purpose of taking his life, had gone to the lonely cemetery, entered the closet and fastened the door, but us the excitement of the thought of do ing the deed had overworked his dls eused heart, he expired before he could accomplish It. The body was found in a sitting posture, us though he had quietly passed away without a struggle, from a natural cause, nearly a month after the deed was committed, but the cold weather had preserved It almost per fectly. The contents of the stomuch were sent to Seattle for a more exhaustive examination, and should Dr. Van Pat ten's decision be confirmed the theory that Frank Willis committed suicide will be completely exploded. , , ---ggar v HOTEL ARRIVALS.
