A tele phone message from Melbourne, '25 miles from Des Moines, says a Mil waukee passenger ' train which left Chicago last night for Des Moines, broke through a bridge two miles west. Five are reported killed and many Injured. Eight coaches werel overturned. The train, an overland limited, left Chicago at 9:06 last night. Accord ing to the officials of the road, up wards of 109 passengers were on the train. The injured are leing carried to Melbourne and Rhodes, the two nearest towns. y The accident occurred at $ this morning. The train, a double-header, was running 70 miles an hur te make up time. The wreck was caused by a broken rail 300 feet from the bridge. The engines Jumped tbe track avnd ran on the ties. Mr. Van Nuys will leave for Lu Grande this evening, but unless his wife's caae should be rather seri- I ous, will not become axposed to the malady. The Van Nuys children are also there, and Mr. Van Nups will care for them. From the fact that Mrs. Van Nuys left here a week ago, it s probable she became exposed to the malady after leaving here. The latest udvices received by Mr. Van Nuys state that the attack Is mild, with no Indication of a serious termination., Suit for Divorce. A divorce suit was instituted today by Llxale Jane Carder against Thos. Carder. The two were married In Whatcomb, Wash.. In 1890, and have no children. The divorce is asked for on the ground of cruel treatment, non-support and desertion. The plaintiff also asks to be given her maiden name of Llsile Jane Miller. MRS. C. B. She was attacked with a bad cold the first of the week and has continued to grow worse until this afternoon, when she was dellr ous a portion of the time. At the council meeting last night Marshal Carney reported thut the quarantine rules were not being ob served in the scarlet fever and diph theria cases now in the city. Accord ing to the marshal there are now nine cases of the former, one case of diph theria and one of smallpox. These places were nil placarded and were supposed to be tinder quarantine. However, Mr. Carney stated that per mission had been given by physicians In two different cases for people to enter and leave houses under quar antine provided they did not enter the sick rooms. This state of affairs, the marshal asserted, placed him in a hard position, and he asked author ity to arrest any person not a physi cian, found entering or leaving a quarantined house. In the absence of the city physician, Dr. Cole, there wnB some doubt us to the proper course to pursue, but the matter was finally refcrerd to the health and po lice committee. Worthlngton, of Chicago, vice E. E. Calvin, resigned. Mr. Worthlngton has been assist ant manager to President Krutt schnltt, and is a highly efficient rail road man and comes to the O. Aftermath of Gomel Riots. St. Petersburg, Feb. 9. The court which haa been trying the cases of those charged with connection with the anti-Jewish riots at Gomel a year ago, today handed down the follow ing deciatoav: Sixteen Russians acquitted, 19 Jews sentenced to five months and 10 days imprisonment with loss of all civil rights. Twelve Russians and 12 Jews were sentenced to the same term without loss of rights.
