100,000 Acres Lying on the Snake
River.
Walla Walla, Jan. 20. One hund
red thousand acres of government
land in Walla Walla county, lying
along the Snake river, will in all prob
ability be thrown open for entry with
in the next 00 duys. Notice to that
effect has been received ut the land
office.
The lands were withdrawn from
ail but homestead entry some time
ago in accordance with the act of
June 17, 1802, under which lands
nuder any reclamation project 'might
be withheld from all but homestead
ers. The department of the Interior
Instructed the commissioner of the
general land office to throw these
lands open to all forms of public en
try to which they were subject before
the withdrawal, as not suituble to Ir
rigation under the reclamation pro
ject for which they were withdrawn.
In accordance with the law govern
ing such cases, the public notice must
be given in the land district concern
ed 00 days before any one may file
for entry on these lands and the
lands in question will not be open for
entt-y until about April 19.

Salem. Jan. 20. The most quiet and
successful jail break 111 the history of
the Snlem city jail was executed this
morning about 8 o'clock, when wan
Ferrell and Mike Penfold, the two
crooks, tore a 2x4 crossbeam irom
the screen In front of the toilet room
in their cell and pried their way to
liberty, through a 7 1-2 inch space,
between iron window bars. The pris
oner were identified by Detective
Kerrigan us burglars wanted in Port
land for a hardware store robbery.

ed out of the Albina shops after a
thorough overhauling.
There Is now but eight Inches of
snow on the summit of the Blue
mountains at Meacham and farmers
are beginning to wonder about water
for irrigation next summer. Usually
at this season of the year there is
from two to six feet of snow on the
summit.
Mrs. J. A. Borie left lust night for
Los Angeles, where she will visit for
two months with her- parents in that
city. She will meet Mr. and Mrs. T.
C. Taylor at Portland and will accom
pany them as far as San Francisco,
where they will take the vessel for
Honolulu on January 28.

Senator Pierce Introduces Bill Giving
Executors Greater Powers.
Following is an important 'bill In
troduced by Senator Pierce, giving
executors power to complete title to
real estate where deceased person had
given only a bond for a deed:
A bill for an act to empower exec
utors and administrators to execute
deeds of conveyance in cases when a
deceased person had executed a bond
for a deed.
Be it enacted by the legislative as
sembly of the state of Oregon; ulso
be it enacted by the people of the
btate of Oregon:
Section 1. If any deceased person
was at the time of his death, a party
to a bond for a deed for the aale and
conveyance of real estate, his interest
in said property may be conveyed by
his executor or administrator, upon
full compliance with the terms and
conditions of such bond by the other
party thereto, and a deed of con
veyance so made shall trunsfer the
same title as though made by .such
deceased, if living.
Sec. 2. Such conveyance shall be
made upon report to the county judge
of the county in which the estate of
such deceased person Is being admin
istered, - showing that all the terms
and conditions of said bond have
been hiet, and if satisfied therewith,
said county judge Bhnll thereupon
make an order authorizing and direct
ing the execution of requisite deed to
the proper parties.
Sec. 8. Inasmuch as there is no
existing law of the state which gov
erns the subject of this act, an emer
gency is hereby declared to exist nnd
this act shall take effect from und
after Its approval by the governor.

.Mrs. Josephine Wootlull Panned Away
Aged 36.
Mrs. Josephine Woodall, aged 36
years, died yesterday afternon of con
sumption at the home of her sister.
Mrs. Peter Van Orsdall. The fune
ral will take place tomorrow after
noon ut 2 o'clock from the Van Ors
diill residence. Mrs. Woodall was a
member of the Women of Woodcraft
and that order wllf have charge of
the funeral. She had resided in Pen
dleton about three years. Her parents
and three brothers and sisters sur
vive her.

spoke last night to a most respectful

received a message today which stat
ed an explosion in his son's residence
near Blackfoot had killed the babe
and several members of the family are

father and one other member of the
family will die from the wounds re
ceived. The family had Just moved
Into a new brick residence.

New York, Jan. 20. Charles M.
Schwab this afternoon was elected
president of the new Bethlehem Steel
corporation, a branch of the ship
building trust.

Terre Haute. Ind., Jan. 20. The

Light Co., was damaged by fire this
morning to the extent of $100,000.

has reported favorably the bill put
