Work has been temporarily sus
pended on the levee which Is to con
nect with the bridge on the north
side of the John Day. The work has
been completed according to contract
but the rock walls along the side of
the Till continue to cave out In places.
The failure of the walls to stand Is
not thought to be due to any fault of
the contractor, but the plan for the
levee seems to be faulty in some par
ticular that comes In the engineer's
line of business. . The contractor has
decided to consult the county judge
before the work Is resumed. Spray

Interior Telephones.
The Pacific States Telephone & Tel
egraph linemen were here Sunday.
They went to John Day Monday and
will commence , repairing the line
from that pluce to Heppner. They
stated work on the new line between
Heppner and Parker's mill has been
discontinued until spring on account
of Inclement weather, but will be re
sumed In the spring, and when com
pleted will have two wires which no
doubt will Improve the service.

Agricultural Commissioner.
Every two years the county courts
of the counties ot llmatllln, Gilliam,
Morrow, Wheeler. Sherman, Wasco
and Crook, which compose the Second
Eastern Oregon Agricultural Society,
appoint a commissioner for their vari
ous counties to serve for the coming
two years. This morning Judge Lake
appointed J. L. Kelly an commissioner
for Wasco county. The Dalles

John Day Horse Market.
H. Y. Bluckwell of Burns. Is buy
ing horses in this vicinity. We learn
that he has bought several head
around Monument, paying from 125
to 5U for saddle and work horses. He
went to Cottonwood Tuesday where
he expects to get a few head. He In
tends taking them to Walla Walla,
where he finds a good market. Mon
