Picture of Poverty Drawn In Clncln
nail.
in Cfmlnnati, on January 8, In his
pclpit, at the Vine Street Congrega
tional church, Herbert S. Blgelow
chose a text from the Psalms:
"Cast me not off In the time of old
age; forsake me not when my strength
falleth."
By way of Illustration Mr. Blgelow
related the following personal experi
ence
One night. Just before the last year
came to an end, with two friends I
visited the Hammond Street police Bla
tlon In Cincinnati.
Telling the sergeant that we wanted
to see the "floppers," he said, "cer
tainly," and led the way down stairs
to a room reserved, not for prisoners,
not for men who have committed any
crime, but for men who have no home I
or shelter and who ask a night's pro
tection from the cold.
The room- was about the size of a
drawing room in one of our hlil-top
mansions. There was a Btove in ine
middle of it and it was warm. The
lights were dim, but It was not dark
enough to hide the litter of human
refuse that lay thick on the floor. On
the bare floor of this room were lying
HI men.
Many had taken off their Bhoes
and, with coat for a pillow, were try
ing to rest. There were murmurs und
wrlthlngs and disgusting odors of
human sweat and filth. We walked
through the room. It was necessary
to look sharp to keep from stumbling
over bodies or stepping on hands or
feet.
Some Daid no attention lo us.
Others peered into our faces as we
passed.

In M. M. Wyrlck s Old Home.
M. M. Wyrick has Just received a
ioi t,- from his old home in Franklin,
Ind., giving him the information that
hla cousin, George w. vvyric.
been elected county treasurer of his
old home county by a majority of 657
votes, the highest majority received
by any candidate.
We noticed, especially, an old
man who sat on the coal box by the
stove. He took no note of us. Ills
face was burled in his hands, and he
was leaning over with his elbows on
his knees. A desolate, homeless, old
man, sitting there In that refuse heap,
and dreaming of other days.
Whutever hopes he had entertained
lit life,' they were gone now. He was
down. He had been caught In the
current and sucked under. Evidently
he was near the end. A little more
cold, a little more hunger, ana men,
ef facement. -
What was the old man thinking oi
with hla face buried In his hands?
He did not seem aware of our pres
ence. Perhaps he was not. Perhaps,
for the moment, he had forgotten
vhr h was. and was roaming, In
his reverie, over the meadows of his
childhood. Perhaps, out of the past,
there was reaching to this old man a
pair of baby arms, and on his wrinkled
brow he was feeling the pressure of
little moist, lips that once-lisped to him
the name of father.
As I beheld that mourniui piciuie.
the words of the Psalmist came to
me:
"Cast me not off in the time of old
age; forsake me not when my strength
