The Pacific Coast Is now facing Qhe most serious and far-reaching vxtwaval in the history of the gov ernment, if President Roosevelt earn estly pursues his investigations Into aJw- land frauds. Xo man can guess the stopping race, nor estimate the number of a-rstiiluent officials and Influential wtliseus to be Involved In these ills-aa-sceful revelations. Oregon is already In the meshes of wae rnqulsltors, Idaho will soon be mtenged into an etjually sensutfonal a? roar and the inspectors are also aeonting on the trulls of Washington aruiirru lions. It is the beginning of a revulutiou. Tfce president will not stop, it Is alleg es!, until the last infamous nest of neves Is smoked out. He is deter aw'ued to clear the government of this was species of fraud, at least, and he net the hearty co-operation and en awuragement of every good citizen. Hardless of party, affiliations or rrjudice. If the frauds are prosecuted to the await and. the rascals weeded out, as at .now seems they will be. one of two awMientous results will follow: Either awe present political power of the thwest states will be entirely un- led in the revulsion of feeling eainnt the party that is largely re smslhle ' for shielding the thieves ad dishonest oficlals, and a new ewer will come into possession of awe states, or else, the republican arty in those states will drop the anvicted officials as though . they ere vipers, as It have done with ator Burton, In Kansas, thus pre serving the Influence of the party, as large by sacrificing the officials Mart have so long been at the lead. H the republican factions take up aw fight and attempt to defend the anatused officiuls, against whom the rcidence is unmistakable.. It will cer ananly mean the utter destruction of atae power of the entire party in the atwrlliwest. . But if the officials are SBBBdiated, abandoned . to their fate, he Integrity of the party will be pre served and the riddance of the thieves U1! only serve to make it stronger, aecause the riddance was accomplish we by a president from Its' own awiiks. NOW, FOR THE SCHOOLS. Vmatllla county is proud of the ag twraltural and horticultural exhibit www being collected for the Lewis sad Clark fair. Tiie breasts of farmer and fruit sawn swell with pride as they contem ajaate the display of Umatilla county sources that will greet the eyes of wintering strangers. But what of the schools? What eaaacatlonal showing is to be preaent aat to the world from Umatilla coun ' Kven more people are interested In tas feature of Umatilla county's ex- hllbt. for every home In the oounty will be especially concerned In the quality, extent and classification of the school exhibit. While the 'county court Is In ses sion itow, something should be done to encourage and assist . Superinten dent Welles In his work of collecting and displaying the educational ex hibit. So far, his hands are tied. The county must be represented, yet he has no funds with which to purchase cabinets for the display. These nec essary features must be provided. The cost will not exceed 12U0 it is thought, and the cabinets can be retalued by the county, to be used in future ex hibits, and will become permanent assets of the county superintendent's office. The educational exhibit can be col lected without expense, as the teach ers will send all reports to the su nerlntendent'se office. where they will be classified, prepared for a creditable display and made ready for the fair. All that Is needed Is a set of cabinets. In which to dlspluy the exhibits, and the county should be glad to supply these, in order to make the best possible showing for the schools of Umatilla. This county must not be In the sec ond or third class, in the general average to be cast In the Lewis and Clark fair. - The educational work is here. It can be collected without cost, und the expense of placing It on exhibit, in first-class condition, should be borne by the county. It will cost Oregon J200.000 to maintain her insane asylum for the next two years, according to the es timates of the secretary of state, be side a deficit from the past two years of $12,000. This is the most extraor dinary Item of expense to be met by the state. The enttentiary expense will be but S60.0UO for the same period, and the entire cost of the leg islative session will be but ISO.OUO. There is something truly alarming in me increase or the asylum t penses. It may well cause anxious inquiries from the legislature. The statehood or Colorado should be taken from her, until that Infa mous gang of political spoilsmen are routed from Its borders or leurn to conduct a state In a civilised manner. The election frauds that are perpe trated there year after year, are dis graceful, and are a severe rebuke to tne Intelligence of the voters, and the honesty of the officiuls. Indian Territory would not conduct such a disgraceful fiasco as Is presented in Colorado with each succeeding elec tion. ITHSE OF MISI1T SHOES. The national curse of the t'nlted Stales Is no longer the drink prrtblem. It's a problem of walking and shneB. Teachers attending the National Association convention at the Audi torium annex made the discovery thut 90 per cent of the women and many of the men do not know how to navigate the streets properly. "Sliding." they say. "Is not walking. and the 'kangaroo' high step Is a Jar to the nervous system." First William Schuyler of St. Louis. startled the assemblage' by announc ing that by close observation he had discovered that a vast per cent of the women school teachers of the coun try did not know how to wnlk cor rectly. ' "They simply slide along In the easiest manner possible, paying no at tention to the rules of physical cul ture, of which they are supposed to have at least some knowledge," said Mr. Schuyler. As this statement was nut disputed, even by the women teachers present. It was allowed to stand. Then President William H. Max well, who la superintendent of the public school system of New York, contributed the last link fn the ohaln of evidence by denouncing the man ner of walking of ordinary mortals as well as teachers. "It Is a national evil a gigantic evil," said Mr. Maxwell. "And It Is brought about largely by the fact that people wear misfit shoes." Chi cago American. TO RAISE COTTON PRICKS. The Georgia farmers who gathered at Fort Oaines and burned 1000 bales of cotton hope to Inspire similar sac rifices ail through the South. It Is rctually proposed that 2.000,000 bales be destroyed, each state burning Its fair proportion. The purpose Is to reduce the supply of the staple and so put up the price. Some years ago, as the result of a "bumper" crop, a movement was started to limit the production of cot. ton and raise the price on the plan that each farmer should reduce his acreage by a certain percentage. The result was that the prospect of better prices led many farmers to plant more than ever. It remains to be seen whether Texas and Mississippi grow ers will not look on Georgia's cotton fires as beacons of hope, nnd store their own crops on the chance of a rising market. New York World. The order of the United States gov ernment removing duty charges from all Imports for the Lewis and Clark exposition has now gone Into effect While exhibitors from foreign coun tries will be permitted to Import their wares duty free, the strictest regula tions will be enforced to see that the order is not taken advantage of by smugglers.
