First Creamery in Idaho.
. The first creamery In the atate was
-atablished at Meridian In this county
w 1897. It wa a co-operative Insti
tution and oon fell Into the hands of
receiver.
L. P. Blddlck, the most successful
seramery man In the state arrived In
189 and purchased the Meridian es
tablishment, which he afterward con
aollduted with the Boise creamery.
The dally output of the Meridian
plant, when Mr. Blddlck became the
owner, was 65 pounds of butter per
jay. I" two years he has Increased
this to 500 pounds per day, and con
tinued that output for two years.
In 1902 a man named Sweet came
In and built a creamery at Caldwell.
The next year he secured the erection
0f plants at Star, Nampa, Emmett,
Welser, Payette and Salubrla.' Of
these only the Star, Nampa and Cald
well plants are now running. During
the year 1902, the Star, Caldwell,
Nampa and Meridian plants jointly
produced 40,000 pounds of butter per
month, or nearly nan a million

Chief Joseph's Successor.
James Stewart, the well known Nez
Perce Indian, was a visitor In the city
yesterday from Kooskla. Mr. Stewart
ttates tnat very utile interest is oe-
lng taken In the election of the suc
cessor to Chief Josepn, except among
the renegade element of the tribe.
Under the laws of the country the
title of chief is of little significance,"
tald Mr. Stewart yesterday, "and
there Is no power acquired by the
title. It Is probable that the title will
be secured by some member of the
tribe, living on other reservations,
unless Mrs. Felix Corbet, sister of the
late Chief Joseph, Intervenes in the
Interest of some member of the tribe
living on this reservation. It Is prob
able thut the council will be attended
only by the renegade element of the
tribe. Lewlston Tribune.

It Is a fact worthy of note that each

explain this phenomenon. In the first
place, nearly every operator in this
