DF.l.AY THAT COST HUMAN LIVES
On the very day of the publication
of the report 'of the Interstate Com
merce fommlasion the United Stntes
supreme court rentierea a ueciamu
thi. rj- of Johnson against the
Southern Pacific Railroad company,
holding that all cars must be equip
ped with uniform automatic couplers,
says the New York World.
The law compelling the use of these
safety appliances was enacted In 1897
but by a series of extensions granted
by congress and of exemptions as
turned by the railroads Its enforce
Rienl has been long delayed. What
the cost has been Is shown In these
conclusions of the Interstate com
merce commission just announced
"The number of trainmen killed. In
coupling accidents during the year
was 278 and the number Injured was
S441. A large proportion of these
deaths and Injuries were due to de
fective equipment, compelling the
men to go between the cars to couple
and uncouple, and might have been
avoided had proper attention been
given to the maintenance of safety ap
pliances."
Justice, humanity and common
business sense demand that, with
court and commission against them,
the railroads bow once for all to the
statute.

What will you do with the clean
page, opened before you today?
Human experience has taught you
that resolutions are as drifting sands;
the world is moving too rapidly for
you to meditate long on beautiful and
elaborate personal programs to be
carried out; you cannot stand still or
you will be left In the rear; you must
think quickly and act on the Instant.
80, what will you do with the clean
page?
It Is said by those who wish to
shirk every responsibility, that dis
honest men. Immoral men. "tricky"
men, .money-loving men, men who
will engage in any kind of a business
allowed by the laws of the land, make
just as much money In a lifetime,
enjoy life just as well and have just
as many Influential friends as consci
entious, moral, honest men, of un
blemished characters.
This is a falsehood, told to sooth
their disturbed consciences.
No matter how "fast" the world is
moving, honesty, Incorruptibility,
cleanliness, conscience, in all the
walks of life, are more highly respect
ed, bring greater rewards, more true
contentment and more good Influen
ces, than any other virtues employed
In the business world.
( Money is not character.
Riches that enable a man to change
suits four times a day and travel over
the world. In seeming cleanliness, are
not the basis of honest manhood.
The sources and fountain heads ot
riches are to be considered in cast
Ing up the estimate of the man. If a
man reaps en unjust reward from his
fellows' needs, or If he takes toll from
vices, or If he enters Into a conspiracy
to oppress those who are helpless, no
matter how rich he becomes, yet is he
a rascal, and no amount of social
whitewash can cover over his spots.
A few days ago, a highly educated
clerk, past middle age, who Is still
working on a salary, but is one of
the most sterling men In the city, said
to the East Oregonlan In the presence
of his employer: "When I was a
young man In San Francisco, I had a
chance to make $20,000 by doing
piece of crooked work, In settling up
the" affairs of a large firm which had
become bankrupt Since I see money
and dishonest men so widely respect
. ed and almost Idolised, I have kicked
myself that I let that opportunity

If the knife of a Cyclops could cut
the honeycomb tn two, longtitudlnal
ly, as Sir John Lubbock used to cut
an ant's nest for the purpose of ob
serving what was going on Inside,
there would be revealed a wealth and
breadth of Industry not eclipsed by
those of many surface communities.
Dozens of elevator shafts, some per
pendicular, others on an incline,
would be found piercing the comb
from top to bottom. In them would
be seen cars carrying men and metal
up and down with the speed of ex
press trains.
In and out, across and back extend
galleries overflowing with activity; In
some, lines of air drills eating their
way Into the rock, In others the sud
den bursting of blasts In the walls of
the lodes. Electric locomotives are
hauling trains of rock cars to the
shafts, or men are found laboriously
pushing handcars through darkened
pubways.
MAKING THE ALKALI EDIIII.E.
Luther Burbank, who Is called the
botanical wizard because of his de
velopment of stoneless plums and
other fruit freaks, has Just produced,
after 10 years' work, a spineless cac
tus, which is half as nutritious as al
falfa and will yield more forage to
the acre.
By a series of crossing and recross-
Ings of different varieties from dlf
ferent parts of the world, Mr. Bur
bank Is aiming to make the plant har
dier and to produce more fruit and
leaves. He has at his Santa Rosa ex
perimental grounds specimens ot a
cactus which he has robbed of thorns,
having brought the leaves to a state
of perfection In which a man can rub
a leaf over his face. Tha surface is
found soft as silk.
The creation of a spineless cactus
la of world-wide Importance. The
plant will grow luxuriantly on the
dry est desert. In this and other coun
tries Its leaves and fruit are food for
man and beast and it will mean to
some regions more than the lntroduc
tlon of the potato meant to Europe.

Health means perfect physical ad

the keynote.
Often a small anatomicul defect
remedied will cure a most stubborn
disease.
Pain Is Nature's warning that a
pinched nerve or blood vessel is strug
gling for freedom.
Whatever Interferes with blood or
nerve supply Is a prime cause of dis
ease. Osteopathy is an appeal to rational
living nnd the common sense treat
ment of disease.
Osteopathy, rubbing." When a
rtehra of your spine Is being forced
Into line or a twisted rib righted, you
will hardly call It rubbing,
The "How" and "Why" of the treat
ment In any form of disease, acute
or chronic, Is explainable to your un
derstanding by Osteopathy, If the Os
teopath hi educated.
Will Osteopathy help you? None
but the Osteopath can tell. If he be
competent, a careful examination will
answer your question.
Don't delay the examination you
may have contemplated until your
disease is seated and the powers of re-
uperatlon gone. Nothing will help
you then.

It seoms to me I'd like to go
Vheve Ihe bells don't ring, nor whis

Nor clocks don't strike, nor gongs
don't sound.
And I'd have stillness all around.
Not real stillness, but Just the trees'
Low whispering, or the hum of bees,
Or brooks' faint babbling over stones
In strangely, softly tangled tones.
Or maybe a cricket or katydid
Or the songs of the birds In hedges
hid.
Or Just some such tweet sounds as

To fill .a tired heart with ease.

If the reader wants stronger proof

what can it be?
W. A. Rose, living on Cottonwood
street, says: "Doan'a Kidney fills
were first brought to my notice some
four yeans ago, when I was living In
Peoria, 111. At that time I waa suf
fering severely from an attack of kid
ney complaint and could scarcely do
a day's work. To atoop or rise after
stooping hurt so acutely that I could
hardly keep from crying out. When
a man has suffered with a back whleh
felt half the time as though It was
broken, which could not stand the
slightest pressure, when he could not
sit -down, stand or lie with any com
fort and still has to go to his dally
work he naturally becomes anxious
about his condition. I procured Co
on's Kidney Pills, used them and they
cured me. About a year ago I came
to Washington, and shortly after
wards noticed symptoms of my old
trouble. I procured Doan's Kidney
Pills at Brock & McComas Co.'s drug
store and three boxes completely ban
ished the trouble leaving no signs
that I had even had a touch of kid
ney trouble In my life. Doan's Kid

them. Tou are welcome to refer to
me at any time and I will gladly give
