Two Dwellings Iturned.
An alarm of fire last night brought
out the department to the corner of
Fourth and Church streets, and when
they arrived on the scene they found
the residence of Alonzo Mitchell a
mass of flames. Both Mitchell's res
idence and thnt of Mrs. E. E. Beggg
adjoining, were completely gutted,
nothing bjt the walls remaining.
Through the assistance of the neigh
bors most of the furniture In both
houses was saved.
The fire Is supposed to have origin
ated from a defective flue In the
Mitchell residence. Mrs. Beggs, who
owns both buildings Is fully Insured,
and while the loss falls heavily upon
her, yet It Is not as bad as It might

Columbia County Hurley.
The fame of Columbia county bar
ley Is rapidly extending and now the
United Slates government Is making
Investigation as to why this cereal ar
rives at such perfection In this section.
Mr. Jacob Welnhard hns received a
request from Mr. Robert Wahl, a gov
ernment expert, for a sample of the
soil on which this barley Is grown, a
sample of the barley, and a sample
of the malt mude from It. The soil
was taken from a field In the vicinity
of Turner station and the three sam
ples have been forwarded, and will
be analyzed. Dayton Courier-Press.

While Mrs. Thomas Flanlgan was
cutting meat with an ax on a table
the other day the ax came off the
handle and In Its flight cut off the
first and second fingers of her son's
hnnd. The boy was standing nenr the
tuble and It is supposed had his band
on the table. The Index finger of the
child was severed entirely, but the
second finger, which wns hanging by
a small piece of cuticle was sewed on
by Dr. MacJ.achlan again nnd may be

Hilly Nell met with a painful and
serious accident yesterday while go
ing up the grade with a big load of
freight. He had taken the two loaded
wagons up trill separately and was be
tween them making a coupling, when
the team backed too suddenly and
was unable la stop In time. Neil was
caught between the heavily loaded
wagons. He had Bevcral ribs and his
collar bone broken, besides some se
