CHRISTMAS MONEY VAST AMOCNT OF NEW MOXET 18 REQUIRED. As Mac as SI0.0O0 In Pennies Is Ab sorbed by Trade Demands In New York City Alone Last Christmas the Treasury Furnished fill S10.0OA Gold Certtflcairs to One Individual Who Needed Them as Gifts. New York. Dec. 14. The sub treasury Is kept busy these days fill ing the demand for Christmas cur rency. The amount of new money required at this season amounts In the aggregate to a very large sum. though naturally the greater demand Is for coins and bills of the smaller denominations. Ten days or two weeks before Christmas, when the holiday trade approaches the floodtide, the New York department stores take great quantities of small coins from the sub-treasury. The amount taken In pennies is very large, as much as J10.000 In pennies being taken at a time. The requests for new currency are not, however, restricted to the hum ble copper cent, or even to one and five-dollar bills. Many new !0 gold pieces are in demand. There are probably very few people who have any need of f 10.000 gold certificates for Christmas presents, and for the most part those who ask for such gun lis forty-ninth annual meeting In Bloomlngton today with headquarters at the Illinois hotel. Common Law Condi tions, or Else Shouhler the Burden of an Enormously Increased Pauper Mt of Dependents, Who Are Not Technically Entitled to Pensions. St. Petersburg, Dec. 14. Most of the provincial authorities directing the distribution of alimony to the families of men serving In the war have decid ed to regulate the positions of the large number of households where there is no legal marriage owing to the Russian Orthodox church refusing to perform the ceremony unless both parties are of that communion, and to their being no civil marriage In Russia. In place of the marriage certificate the semtsvos are accepting a written declaration announcing the parties bound to each other, and prepared to proceed to full marriage as soon as the law permits. The step was found necessary as many families physically resisted the taking of their men to the war until their claim to support was recognised. Many Jews who have been taken to the war have consented to divorce on the understanding of remarriage should they return. Their marriage law in Russia refuses to recognize a wi.low us such unless the death cer tificate of her husband is signed by two eye-witnesses of his death. The ruhbis refuse to accept the military returns where merely the fact of death iu battle or hospital Is stated. As in the grent battles many hundreds are killed whose bodies are not re covered, their widows. If they are Jews, cannot remarry. Their author ities now sanction the temporary divorce.
