Preston, manager of the Athena branch of the Preaton-Parton Milling Co., -whose other mill is located at Waitaburg, Wash., escorted a representative of the East Oregonian over the newly eompleted mill here, and told many interesting things relative to the early history of the milling Industry In this country. . , Tha oonstructioa of the mill i commenced last August. It is (0 feet In height caaalstlng of tour stories. It has a-00-barrel capacity a day. and will require approximately 209 horse power to operate it. It will be sperated by electric power, the power being supplied by the Washington Oregon Power Co. ' In addition to using the power for Sanning the mill they will also snp- , ly the towns of Atbena and Weston rlth power, using their own poles and sires, and equipment. Mr. Anderson, apertatendent of the power company, srpecta to turft - on the power next Iriday. ' The machinery In the mill is from ha AHIs-Chalmers Co.. and Is of the -scat modern design, the flour trai ling three miles -lh aponts from the levator Before It is sacked as flour. , Tha Praston-Partoa Milling Co. has . 2fr-year contract for 200 horse ewer, with as much mora power as tey may require to supply the light ad power system for Athena and W. B.' Myers, who is a pioneer iller. Is the head miller. Mr. Myers one of the old-timers In this bnal- ws. as ha operated the old Pro betel or Bsill at Weston 2t years ago. The ill Is ready to start grinding as soon the power Is turned on. They tve ,000 bushels of wheat on hand id 2D0.A0 bushels contracted for d ready for delivery, when needed. Their est put will consist of white or. whole wheat floor, graham d Skooknm Wheat flakes. Their tnd will be called the "8kookum" or. la the manufacture of the ..ham, they will use the old system. . ut which nothing better has ever ' -n discovered. The grinding by oes or Varra. The burrs maed tor s parpoae eome from Marselllea, uua. of the Old Peer- hraad toy the -wca aaa boon an- ah tt yeaia. la the earbjr days of the output of the old Waiuburg mill was taken into the mines about Florence and Orofino. Vollmer and Scott, probably one of the wealthiest firms in Idaho, were heavy patrons of the Waltsburg mill in the early i days. The old books ct the mill show ! how Mr. Preston furnished Mr. Scott, an outfit of mules to pack in his' goods and the flour to start a store In I the Idaho mines. Dave Taylor, mayor i of Athena, and other old-timers used ' to haul their flour from Waitaburg in the early days. The Preston-Parton ! Co. started operations on a small i scale in Waitaburg, Wash., in 16(5. operating an old-fashioned burr mill ; of 25-barrel capacity. Mra S. M. j Walte. the wife of the founder of' Waitaburg. and Mrs. W. G. Preston, I made the first flour sacks, using the ' canvas covers of the wagons with i which they had crossed the plains, for the purpose. This was partly because the sacks ! must be transported by pack team and required to be strong, and also be-' cause it was the only available ma-! terial they had of which to make the; sucks. Mrs. Preston, the mother of D. H. Preston, v. ho operates the mill, here, is one of the earliest pioneers. She was bom in IMi at what is now Boise, idahu, while her parents were en route to the Willamette vulley. She can readily lay claim to being the first white child born In Idaho, as well as one of the first In the north west. Fred Lockley. MH)fH Trutt Those Wlio Have Tried.
