Wood, Author, Lawyer, Poll- llriMa, Says Ills Leanings An Ar auvfelxtlo He Relieves In the Ut most Prmlom and is Willing o TrUKt to AbMolme Freedom to Kight All Wrongs In the Social Systran Thinks No Idle 1,bikI Should Be Held for Profit, The Morning Oregonlan, i report ing a recent lecture by C K. S. Wood, the well known Portland author, pol itician and lawyer, before the Port land Woman's Club, gives Oie follow ing synopsis and review 4 the state ments made by Mr. Wood C. E. S. Wood made a confession to the Woman's Club yesrerday after noon which caused some of the more timid members to look uneasy and cast surreptitious glances towards the open door. It was In the midst of a discussion on "Economic Free dom as the Basis of Social, Moral and Religious Reform," that he made statement that his learnings were an archistic. He said: "Socialism may or may n6t be the best possible condition for the state, t many people believe society ta rapidly trending that way trending toward the common ownership of all wealth by the state, 1 do not say that socialism Is the best solution, though it may be. My own tendencies are anarchistic. I believe In that condi tion of society which allows any man the freedom to help himself to and make the best use of that which no one else is using or which another Is not using properly. "I am not a Henry George man. George believed that the great econ omic question could be settled by the abolition of all taxation except on land, which should be all taxed alike at Its rental value. That Is, that no Improvements should be taxed as now. but lust the bare land, so that all owners of unimproved lots and lands must put them to use at once In or der 'to pay the tax. Now. I believe that It would be better If all land not in use were free to any one who shall put It to use. The proof of the economic strength of this prorosltlon Is that in all in stances where an opportunity offers for its operation It Is at once adopted, Witness the mining regulations of the pioneers of California. Each man could locate a limited 'claim.' It was bis so long as he worked It. If he failed to work It, it was open t'o the next man who cared to drive his pick into It." Mr. Wood had many interesting things to say in his address, which seemed to meet with the approbation o o o o llMSilBQl'B In bai-Kulnft rill over :tlie houne vulneH that will do your licart pwMl wifl miite tu "Rlwl llmt I,ee TeutHcii s Ieparlmrnt More is tttetobenrf.l9u,Mt'OiOy with low pricew'but good, reliable merrimmlifie, tliat Is fully gHraiiteHl repreweiitwl, or your uiunry chrrr fulli irfondtd. of his hearers, but Interspersed with I these approved expressions were a number of statements which caused a most perceptible stiffening of back bones and a tinge of front In the at mosphere. In illustrating what relative econ omic freedom had done for the hu man race, Mr. Wood said: "The col ony of criminals which England sent to Botany Bay found economic free dom, and look how they have pro gressed: Virginia was originally set tled with hobos and prostitutes, but see what It Is now! I will guarantee that if criminals of good physical con dition are placed In relative economic freedom their children will be re spec table. ' A higher plane of morals (which Is custom) will only come from higher plane of thought una the high er plane of thought can only be produced through physical comfort. The two great taws of the universe are the pursuit of happiness and self ishness. Food is the first cry of all criminals and Is the only real necessi ty of existence. Other things are In sense necessities, bvit not real ones. Today the pursuit of happiness Is so complex that It means a great many things. "Before there can be any great strides in development the first law I of the universe must be filled, and It is futile to talk morality to those who do not reach It. Chastity, puvlty and virtue cannot be expected from girls who are living a life of drudgery, whose small earnings do not provide them with sufficient food and warm clothing and a comfortable place to sleep and rest, and tt Is not for us to condemn them because they have not been able to meet that first great law. As to gambling. I admit that It is not a positive necessity of life it It, a craving or a passion to make a big amount by a short cut. but I do not presume to condemn it any more thnn I would to criticise the fault of any mnn until I had stood In his shoes." Mr. Wood touched on many points, on all of which his iews are Individ ualistic. In speaking of the money question, he declared that we did not need national banks if they prevented other reliable banks from issuing their own notes. He touched on the tariff question and declared that no system can be right which takes from the many and gives to the few. land monopoly he pronounces one of the greatest evils the present day bus to face. "Economics which Is the science of human life In relation to the earth lies at the root of the intellectual progress of the race. Freedom can be trusted as the highest god of the unl verse you can always trust It. Never in the history of the world has it worked an injury to the human race." Address, B. H. TRUMBULL, Commercial Agent, 142 Third Street, Portland. Oregon. A New Industry GARMENT MAKING ADDED TO THE LIST F PEXDLEON'S INDUSTRIES. Since the chmige In the inanagc inont of the Pendleton Woolen Mills, which occurred on September 1st, liiHt, a garment department has been added, and now Smoking Jackets, Hath Holies, Lounging Robca, Shoot ing Shlils, Arctic Blouses and To boggan Coats, are being manufactured. These garments already give evi dence of soon being as popular as the famous Blankets, Robes and Shawls made by this Institution. Hut few samples have been shown. hut so great haa been the call for these garments that they have been behind on order ever since com mencing to manufacture them, In spite of the fact that they have made new additions to the machinery to turn them out. The Pendleton merchants have been showing the Smoking Jacket for about two weeks and now samples of their Hath Robes are on display and are even prettier than one would Imagine. They are made out of the same high-grade cloth that goes Into the Indian Robes, and one of these Bath ltobes, If worn every evening for the ordlnury lifetime, would still be serv iceable, for they are practically a garment that will not wear out. In contemplating the purchase of a Smoking Jacket or Bath Robe but few people consider that a cheap ar ticle will always look cheap and ran der but poor service. The Pendleton Buth Robe and Smoking Jackets, while higher In first cost, will give the wearer longer ervice, mora com fort and better satisfaction than a cheap article. They ar a distinct novelty and for Christmas or holiday present will not fall to please, no matter how fas tidious or particular the recipient may be. In making up Chrlatmas Hat remember the Pendleton gar ment. Wallace Dye ha been found guilty at Glasgow, Mont., of murder In the second degree.
