Kdwanl A. Edward A. Reals, district weather forecaster for OreKon, has sent out a circular letter to the press, condemn i Ing whiit he calls the "long range" weather forecasts of the almanacs and scientific papers, and giving the I reusons for the government's opposi tion to these forecasts. The circular Is as follows: There are today In the United States, us well as in other civilized countries, a few persons who make their living by publishing so-called long-range weather forecasts, based j i upon old theories which have no I foundation, and which scientific men long ago rejected. We also find in ! almost every community some man who sets himself up as a weather prophet, and who prognosticates, year after year, hard winters, dry spells and other calamities. Once in a great while he hits the mark, and then his "I told you so" receives pub lic acknowledgement; all his previous misses are fot gotten, and great is his fame throughout the land. These men may be conscientious in their belief, or veritable tricksters, it matters not which, and does not change the fact that their sayings In 1861 the population of Australia was 1,165.183; now It Is 3,926.622, ex clusive of aborigines.
