that no effort will be made to break
records, but the bulldera are confi
dent that the ship will exceed the
contract speed. Since the Colorado,
a stlster ship of the Pennsylvania,
came back from her government trial
lust month with the official speed of
22.24 knots to her credit, the opinion
has grown that the Pennsylvania
could at least duplicate that.
The contract for the building of the
Pennsylvania was signed with that of
the Colorado January 10, 1901. She
Is a protected cruiser of the first
class, and with the Colorado repre
sents a new and most powerful type.
The armor of the Pennsylvania Is of
sufficient thickness to withstand the
Impact of projectiles fired at fighting
range from vessels carrying guns of
the same calibre as hers. The vessel
Is 502 feet in length, 69 feet 6 inches
beam, mean draught of 24 feet 1 inch
and has a normai displacement of 13,
690 tons.
