AMONG THE EXCHANGES OF THE INLAND EMPIRE New Town oa Grand Hondo. G. A. Rogers la having a portion of his COO-acre tract of land, at the mouth of the Grand Ronde, surveyed and platted Into a townslte, says the Asotin Sentinel. Surveyor Swain has been at work on the Job for a couple of weeks or more, but It will require quite a lit tle time yet fo complete the work of platting. The Sentinel did not learn what name the new town will carry, but that will be known In due time; neither could we learn how soon the new town site v.ill be placed on the market, but most likely not until the early spring. The townslte Is a very beautiful one, Is In Asotin county and Is about 23 miles distant from Asotin, on Snake river, where the Grand Ronde river enters the former stream. There Is plenty of room for the building up of a splendid town at that point, and It Is not unlikely that much activity will be the result and a good growth given the place as soon as property Is known to be on the market. The new town will be pro vided with an abundance of pure wa ter, secured from Joseph creek, and conveyed to the place through an Ir rigating canal. Hteumers can reach the point at any season of the year and In the course of a very short time a most attractive and substantial little city should beautify that part of the coun try. W, Blckford, a representative of the La Grande Creamery Company, was In Elgin tlilB week trying to In duce the farmers of this section to send their cream to La Grande, and to this end he has been quite suc cessful. The amount Bhlpped there this fall will be quite limited but by spring the shipments will be greatly Increased. We were informed that Mr. Ilickford's company would pay 25 cents per pound for butter fut de livered f. o. b. at La Grande. A num ber of our farmers are well pleased with the proposition, as this will give them a much better opportunity of realizing a profit from the milking of their cows than they have had here tofore. Elgin Recorder. Win Bet on Turner. S. S. Bailey, well known In Seattle ns a capitalist, business man and shrewd political observer, who Is now In Walla Walla taking In the races, has telegraphed to Seattle his desire to bet $1000 on the election of George Turner as gevernor. Mr. Bailey's telegram Is addressed to the Times and he declares he la willing to wager that sum of Turner. There is no condition Imposed by Mr. Bailey other than that both can didates live until election day. The presumption from this telegram Is that he Is looking for even money. Mr. Bailey Is one of the best known betters on election results In the state and his Judgment on elections has been good In the past. His confi dence In the election of Turner is sig nificant. Dirt will be flying on the portage road at Celllo within 30 days. J. C. McCabe. a Seattle contractor. Is on the ground with the engineers, and will probably get the job and the Open River Association is busy rais ing 140,000 among the farmers of Eastern Oregon and Washington, who are to be benefited by the portage road. This sum will make the amount available for building and equipping the eight miles of road $200,000, the other portion having been appropriat ed by the last Oregon legislature. Walla Walla Statesman. After Owners of Dives. Warrants for the "men landlords," a new phrase coined at the tall tower, were Issued last night by Judge Hln- kle on the application of E. E. Demp sle and Attorney Harris Baldwin. The "men landlords" are accused of per mitting the "women landladies" to run houses leased through the "men landlords" under conditions which are forbidden by the state law. Spo kane Press.
