Human Head Sent From Japan to
Minneapolis
A human head from Japan and a
piece of heron feather jewelry from
China are the first consignments to
reach the Minneapolis postofflce un
der the new parcels post convention
with those countries, says the Minne
apolis Tribune. The duty was paid
In San Francisco by the Importer, a
Chinese property holder In the twin
cities.
The head has Deen so nltered by
secret chemical processes that it re
sembles a carving In wood. The se
cret Is now known only to one family
in Japan, the Tanakas of Yokohomn.
but was formerly an art known to
several South American Indian tribes.
The heads are secured from Can
ton, China, after beheading and are
imported to Japan. The heads are
wrapped closely with bandages, and
are soaked in different chemicals.
This produces a hardening and
shrinking of the fibers tyid eventually
the head Is but half the former size
and Is as hard as wood. During the
treatment It becomes a reddish brown
but may be bleached ' to its natural
colors.
The heron feather Jewelry Is one
of the strangest creations of the
"flowery kingdom," and Is manufac
tured at Shanghai and Canton.
The heron Is a difficult bird to
capture und there Is only one feather
In each tall that can be used. This
Is then cut Into minute fragments,
which form the basis of a blue enam
el. The enamel is used on some of
the finest Chinese Jewelry. The ap
prentices who do the work, labor for
four years learning the art for their
meals, they then work for four years
at nominal wages. By this time the
fine work has rendered them stone
blind and they are turned loose to
work as common coolies. at the docks
for 10 cents a day.
