Tliere is nothing particularly amall or modest when it comes to Sumpter and what the Sumpter paper call the Sumpter mining district. The bounds of the district would be hard to de termine by them, though readers would be led to believe that every mining property In Eastern Oregon Is Included. On this subject a few days since we heard a traveling man who Is thoroughly acquainted with the mining camps of Eastern Oregon make the assertion that there Is real ly no Sumpter district. He says that Sumpter is a good town; the princi pal supply point for our mines, and will continue to be such. But that to speak of the "Sumpter district" Is a misnomer. Granite Gem. To Maintain Lumber Rntcs. The Western Pine Shippers' Asso ciation, which Includes most of the manufacturing lumbermen of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho, has refused to unite with the coast lum ber manufacturers to secure from the railroads a 40 cent rate on pine lum ber from the coast to Missouri river points. At a meeting held here the Western pine shippers voted not to oppose the movement of the coast men, but at the same time not to support It unless the present dlffer tlals are maintained.
