Milton. Sept. 27. Miss Eva King,
who Is matron nt the Wnlla Wnlla
hospital, came over Sunday for n few
day's visit with her aunt, Mrs. F. R.
Wilcox.
Last Saturday James Edwards sold
his home place to II. M. Cockburn
for J2500. Mr. Edwards will buy n
small place nearer town, nnd build a
cottage.
The Harvest ball given last Friday
night was quite a success, both social
ly nnd financially. Fifty couples
were present. Johnson's orchestra
of Athena, furnished the music.
J. S. Rtchey, who Is employed In
the butcher shop of Ous Harris nt
Walla Wnlla, spent Sunday here with
his family.
Miss Ethel Stewart has returned to
Walla Wnlla after a few days' visit
with Miss Rose Beckins.
Last night a surprise party was
given at the home of Mr. nnd Mrs.
Samuel Gray In honor of the Kith
birthday of their son, Clarence. Twen
ty of his young schoolmates were
present nnd spent n social evening
In games and music. Light refresh
ments were served.
Miss Inez Phelps will go to Pome
roy, Wash., Thursday, nnd will be a
guest of Miss Nellie Sanderson.
Miss Jennie Butler Is quite serious
ly 111 with dropsy, nt the home of
her mohter, Mrs. H. D. Morrison,
eight miles east of town. Grave
doubts are entertained concerning
her recovery.

Two Interesting Preliminaries to the
McCoy-King Bout Arranged.
Everything Is In readiness for the
10-round sparring contest to take
place at the Pendleton Athletic club
tomorrow night between Andy King
of Walla Walla, and Young Kid Mc
Coy of Wilmington, Del., featherweights.
Both men are In excellent condition
for the bout nnd will enter the ring
nt 12G pounds. McCoy Is training In
this city. King Is still In Walla Wal
la, but Is expected to arrive In Pen
dleton this evening.
Two Interesting preliminaries are to
be pulled off the night of the contest
between local bantam weights. Man
ager Billy Bogert, of the club has pro

PROGRAM FOR INSTITUTE.
Superintendent Welles Returns From
Brief Visit to Weston.
County School Superintendent
Frank K. Welles, returned last night
from Weston, where he conferred
with President French of tho Eastern
Oregon state normal Bchool regarding
the program for the coming Inland
Empire and Umatilla County Teach
ers' Institute.
"The program will be completed In
about a week," said Mr. Welles. "We
have secured the consent of a num
ber of leading educators of the North
west to be present and deliver papers
and lead lu the discussions. The
coming Institute, I believe, will bo of
much Importance to the teachers of
this part of the country, nnd we
look for a large .attendance."
Mr. Welles says the state normal at
Weston started this fall with a larg
er attendance than last year. "Pres
ident French," he said, "Is looking
forward, to a very successful year In
tho history of the school.
"I did not havo time to visit the
public school, but understand that
tho enrollment Is large,"
