La Grande. Sept. 27. New houses. streets, fences, sidewalks and other evidences of the living are lnvudliiK the city ot the dead in this city. Dr. T. T. O'Connor recently pur chased u tract of lund adjoining the city on which was located the first ' ifinetery ever laid out in Grand ' lumde valley, und for tlie past six niuuths friends and relatives have been s'owly removing the remains to i make room for new houses. ! Most of the known graves have been opened and the remains placed , at rest elsewhere, but there ni e yet 1 nearly CO unknown graves remaining j untouched and the real estate com J pany wlll he compelled to remove these corpses und bury them In a later cemetery. Several new houses are now being constructed on the site of the old cemetery. It was situated on a beau tiful knoll between the old and new La Grande, und the district Is one of the most sightly In the city, and is neur the location of the new court and Is very valuable. The first grave was made in this old cemetery In 18C2, and from that year until 1880, when the new Odd Fellows' cemetery was luld out all the dead from the vicinity of La Grande found a resting place in the old cem tery. Now there are two other beau tiful cemeteries, the Odd Fellows' und fhe Masonic, und the few remaining dead lu the old wlll be removed and flaced lu one of these new cemeter ies at once. Many of the. old pioneers of the valley were bulled In the old ceme tery but later were removed to one of the pew grounds. ine removal of this cemetery re calls an Incident In the real estate Wislness In - Uaker City a few years ago, a local- real estate dealer sold fceveral lots to eastern people, who naa iiever seen the property, but "ere satisfied that tt,."wns wlthfn the corporate limits ot,puker City, then called the "Denver of the West." When the owners came west sev- years after and hunted up the numbers of their land, It woa .found that they had been sold lots In a cent 'lory on the hill overlooking town.
