A special to the Oregon Dally Jour nal from Washington says: One of the most drastic orders ever Ixsued by the government for the pro tection of the Indian tribes against frauds and robbery has been promul gated by Acting Secretary ot the In terior Ityan. The order amends the rule for the sale of 1 ill) i.'il led Indian lunds, so as to require thnt tlio proceeds lu be de rived from their sale shall be placed with the most convenient United States depository to the credit of each holr in proper proportion subject to the check of such heirs or their rec ognized guardians for amounts not exceeding $10 to each in any one month. Ilefure being paid, howevCr, It will be necesnrry for these cheeks to be approved by tile agent or other offi cer In charge. For stuns lu excess of $10 per month, the money will be paid upon the approval of the agent only when specifically authorized to do so by the commissioner of Indian affairs. Acting Secretary ltyan said that heretofore the lands have been sold to the highest bidder and the proceeds paid directly to the Indians, with the result that III many Instances the In dians were soon divested of their money.
